WHAT TO LISTEN FOR: 3 contrasting themes (1st is folklike and pentatonic; 2nd is broad and lyrical; 3rd interrupts with portrayal of a Nazi invasion that erupts in violence).

Shifting meters and irregular rhythms. Polytonal and atonal harmonies. Rondo-like form, with recurrences of opening folk tune (A-B-A�-C-B�-A�). Sentimental mood representing composer’s love for his homeland.
