The Barrel Model of Culture

Superstructure includes a culture’s ideologies, religion, and ideas. This

layer could include beliefs, religion, traditional healing, rituals,

ceremonies, rites of passage, art, music, and cosmology.

Social Structure concerns rule-governed relationships that hold

members of a society together, including households, families,

associations, and power relations. Social structure should include

kinship, households, marriage, political organization, and social

organization.

Infrastructure is the economic foundation of a society, including its

subsistence practices and the tools and other material equipment

used to make a living.
