Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital

Phoebe Putney Health System is a not-for-profit network of more than 4,500 physicians, nurses, professional staff, and volunteers. We deliver compassionate, high quality healthcare to more than 500,000 residents in our 41-county region. Phoebe provides a better way to health and wellness for our entire community.

We are a recognized leader in specialties including cardiovascular medicine, oncology, orthopaedics, and women’s health; and we offer patients the most advanced diagnostic and therapeutic treatments available.

Phoebe also operates Phoebe Physicians, a self-governing, not-for-profit network that includes clinics and hospital-based physicians representing a wide range of medical specialties. Through our facilities, physician network, and innovative partnerships, we bring state-of-the-art medicine to Georgia’s hometowns.

History In the ten decades since, the hospital's service area has grown to a population of over 500,000, and Phoebe has grown to a population with it into one of America's most progressive community health systems. With growth, the goal has been to bring the most advanced medical talent and technology - at a level generally found only in major population centers - to the citizens of Southwest Georgia. But some things haven't changed. As Phoebe has grown from a single hospital to a health system, the more than 4,500 members of the "Phoebe Family" serving at all Phoebe facilities have remained dedicated to Judge Putney's original mission of service to all.

FINANCIAL PERSPECTIVE

In 2018, The hospital had $615.78 million in total assets in Fiscal Year 2018, down from $625.96 million in FY 2017. The total revenues, gains and other support for the 2018 fiscal year were $530.78 million, while total expenses were $528.85 million and operating income $1.9 million. That left $2.9 million in excess revenues.

In 2017, those numbers were $518.56 million in total revenues and gains, $517.13 million in total expenses, $1.4 million in operating income and $5.9 million in excess revenues. Net assets at the beginning of 2018 were $121.67 million and at $184.49 million at the end of the year. In 2017, these figures were at $91.43 million and $121.67 million, respectively.

The report said that, in accordance with Phoebe’s policy, the hospital conducts ongoing reviews estimating the useful lives of its property and equipment.

“This review indicated that the actual lives of certain property and equipment were longer than the estimated useful lives used for depreciation purposes in the corporation’s financial statements,” the report said. “As a result, effective Aug. 1 2017, the corporation changed its estimates of the useful lives of its property and equipment to better reflect the estimated periods during which these assets will remain in service.”

Compassion is our core. For us, it’s not a catch phrase – it’s who we are.

Service is our calling. This is not just a job; this is our life's work – it’s what we love and what we are meant to do.

Commitment is our promise to always get better. We don't settle for "that's how it has always been done." We learn from our past and build a better tomorrow.

LEARNING/GROWTH PERSPECTIVE

TOTALS

In 2010, the facility bought out the area's only other hospital, Palmyra Medical Center, for $195 million. PMC was owned by Hospital Corporation of America, the country's largest hospital operator. The acquisition ended a lawsuit over Palmyra's provision of obstetric services.

Because of the merger, the hospital agreed to a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission in 2013 that for the next 10 years, PPMH and the Hospital Authority of Albany-Dougherty County, without first notifying the FTC, would not acquire another medical facility within Dougherty, Lee, Baker, Terrell, Worth, and Mitchell Counties. PPMH and the hospital authority also agreed for the next five years to not file an objection to a Certificate of Need granted to a general acute care hospital within the six-county region.
