Case Study: RS

The Goal for Patients Treatment

Based on the case study, the patient has bacterial vaginosis. Therefore, treatment goals include reducing the risk of infectious complications and other infections, including STD and HIV (Tomás et al., 2020). Another goal includes relieving vaginal symptoms and any signs of infection.

Drug Therapy

The most appropriate drug therapy for the patient is metronidazole at a dosage of 500mg orally twice per day (Lee et al., 2020). This drug acts by diffusing the organisms and inhibiting protein synthesis responsible for the structure breakage.

Patient Education

The healthcare professional need to have the patient inform that the drug should be swallowed with plenty of water and that she may take it with a meal or snack. Moreover, the professional should inform the client to avoid drinking alcohol while on the medication.

Adverse Reactions Necessitating Therapy Change

Adverse reactions such as nerve damage and seizures may necessitate therapy change. Though these side effects are rare, they can severely harm the patient. Thus the therapy should be changed once they are noted.

Alternative Medications Appropriate For the Patient

The professional may alternatively recommend the patient to take Tinidazole at a dosage of 2g orally once daily (Nikhar et al., 2020).

Recommended Dietary or Lifestyle Changes

The professional may recommend the patient add probiotics and prebiotics to her diet to balance vaginal acidity levels (Mizgier et al., 2020). The professional may also advise her to drink more Cranbury juice to reduce the risk of UTIs. Moreover, the professional may recommend always clean the genital region with unscented soap exercise regularly and reduce sweat around the vagina.

1. List specific goals of treatment for this patient.

R.S is suffering from Bacterial Vaginosis. This is a condition that occurs when bacteria that are found in the vagina overgrows. This interferes with the natural balance of the vaginal flora leading to the infection. The main goals of treating R.S will be to relieve symptoms associated with the infections and also reduce chances of developing other complications and infections

2. What drug therapy would you prescribe? Why?

The main drug therapy that will be prescribed for the patient is metronidazole (Anstey Watkins et al, 2019).). This is an antibiotic that is considered as a first line of treatment for the condition. The recommended dosage will be 500mg taken orally, twice daily for 7 days.

3. Discuss specific patient education based on the prescribed therapy.

The specific education that will be provided is that the patient needs to avoid alcohol during the duration of taking the drug. Moreover, it will be vital for the patient to extent the alcohol abstinence for an additional one day after completion of the medication dosage. This will help the patient to avoid any feeling of nausea and stomach upsets.

4. List one or two adverse reactions for the selected agent that would cause you to change therapy.

The main adverse reactions that can cause the change of the Metronidazole includes the following: confusion, blurred vision, blindness and lack of coordination.

5. What OTC or alternative medications would be appropriate for this patient?

The other medication that will be appropriate for the patient during this time will be Clindamycin which is also an antibiotic. The dosage for this medication will be 300mg that will be taken orally twice daily for the next 7 days.

6.What dietary or lifestyle changes should be recommended?

The patient needs to adopt healthy eating habits such as taking probiotics and prebiotics. Other healthy lifestyle changes include reducing the number of sex partners, use of latex condoms and avoiding douching (Bilardi et al., 2016).
