Statement of Interest I am an Occupational Health and Safety Manager in health-care setting looking to advance my already successful professional and academic record by finding a suitable graduate entry level position with a progressive employer. My aim is to apply the knowledge and skills that I have gained to positively contribute to the success of the organization I will be part of, as I continue building my knowledge base in occupational health and safety management. Throughout my life, I have aspired and longed to promote Occupational Health and Safety in the workplace. I have lived my life and dedicated and promoted the employees' need to have a right working environment free from injuries and accidents. The dedication towards these goals, better working conditions, safe work environments, and the importance of having injury-free workers sparked my interest in furthering my occupational health and safety education. Throughout my career working as a safety engineer at Setraco Nigeria Limited, I have seen employees get hurt and become incapacitated due to failure to observe a few safety guidelines. Some people have lost the stability of their lives, affecting their families negatively. From this experience, I knew that I need to understand Occupational Health and Safety better to help the employees in the workplace work efficiently and reduce accidents and injuries, hence improving their quality of life. Therefore, I have decided that I need to change the work environment dynamics and help the employees understand how they can work without affecting their safety in the work environment.

My career path towards Occupational Health and Safety was inspired by the stories I read and heard about the work environment. It was inevitable that employees were faced with significant challenges especially working in an environment where injuries and accidents are rampant. This is where I understood that I needed to learn and maintain high safety and health standards in the working environment.

My desire to venture into this field and contribute positively led me to work towards my goals by enrolling in the Chemical Engineering Institute of Management and Technology. This provided a platform to work in different work environments in various positions, such as supervising safety in risky work environments. One thing that was common in all these areas is that employees lackknowledge and experience in Occupational Health and Safety. There are established standards that are adopted but kept in files. The employees are not conversant with the safety measures and standards that should be held, and hence the probability of making mistakes is high.

With the experience I gained from different companies, I was honored to work as a safety engineer in Setraco Nigeria Limited, an engineering company dealing in construction works. In my work line, I have seen people ignore the smallest safety requirements, which leads to accidents that affect them over a long time. I have been in this work for 13 years. As I continue to explore different health and safety challenges, I understand the need to incorporate standards and ensure employees are well guided on following them. Without access to the right information, it isn't easy to apply the proper knowledge and skills. However, without knowledge of occupational disease and injuries and the compensation systems and regulations available, I know that I cannot help the employees fully, especially in case of an accident, unless I pursue further studies in this area.

When I started to explore a Master's in Occupational Health and Safety opportunities, Memorial University was the first choice. I am attracted to learn under the brilliant and dedicated professors who work tirelessly and enhance practical and theoretical knowledge in Occupational Health and Safety. I feel that I will learn under professors who have similar interests as mine and work to ensure the workplace is safe and healthy for the employees.

The main inspiration for pursuing a Master's degree in Occupational Safety and Health is that I will have the opportunity to gain real-life experience in line with my experience. This will allow me to explore different facets making up Occupational Safety and Health. For this reason, I am confident that I will devote myself to this program. Should I be given a chance at Memorial University, I am optimistic that I will achieve the goals I have aspired to meet as I prepare to be a future leader in Occupational Health and Safety.

Some of the areas I am hoping to focus on when given a chance to study at Memorial University are occupational Health and safety sociology. This is an area that is broadly uncovered primarily because the companies work on enhancing their profits and not the wellbeing of the workers. Supervised research work in this area will also play an essential role in improving my knowledge and skills.

Although I do not have a degree in my area of interest, I hope that the knowledge and skills I have gained as a safety engineer have effectively prepared me for a Master's degree in Occupational Health and Safety. Through the various situations that I have faced, I have gained essential skills to bring change and help employees work in a safe and healthy environment. The experiences have also motivated me to bring about change that will impact the lives of the workers and help enhance their quality of life as they work.

Short-term and Long-term Goals

My main focus is to develop my career in Occupational Health and Safety. However, I intend to complete my graduate degree in Occupational Health and Safety in the short term. I also plan to gain more practical experience from firms outside Nigeria to have sufficient skills working in this field. I need to understand and interpret the industry standards, which will enhance the practices in the workplace. I also plan to gain risk management principles to ensure that I will be able to identify and evaluate psychosocial hazards. Within the next three years, I also want to effectively break into the industry and learn several sets of new skills. I want to gain skills and experience in leadership and team-building. This is because I want to contribute to enhancing the lives of the employees effectively. I need to have the right skills and authority in the industry to influence others positively.

Over the long term, I want to be a construction and building inspector in Nigeria. This will be a platform that will enhance my participation in improving Occupational Health and Safety in different companies throughout the country. In such a position, it is possible to safely and healthy the workers in this fieldwork. It will also be possible to ensure that the companies provide working conditions in line with human dignity and all workers' wellbeing. A work environment should provide personal achievement and fulfillment of the set goals as opposed to being a place where death and injuries can always occur. I also look forward to being a health and safety consultant. I will offer the firm's services and provide the right information on the need to adhere to Occupational Health and Safety standards and upholdtheright working environment. In such a position, I will also develop company-specific measures that are important in the working environment.I also want to provide mentorship to other people growing in the field of Occupational Health and Safety to build a strong network. Through such mentorship, it will be possible to enhance the growth of safety in the industries. I also aspire that I will be involved in teaching the people about safety as an academic instructor in the future. This is because I believe that to make the most significant impact in this field and profession, it is essential to incorporate others, share knowledge and skills, and cooperate in resolving the problems of health and safety facing workers in the workplace.
