HISTORY

Ayurveda is a 5000- year – old system of natural healing that has its origin in the Vedic culture of India.

Ayurveda means “ The science of life”.

Ayur- life , Veda – science or knowledge.

Ayurvedic medicine is holistic, which means viewing the body and mind as a whole.

Ayurveda is derived from two Sanskrit root words. Ayu meas life and veda means science or knowledge. Thus it would be safe to call ayurveda as the science of life more than a mere system of treating an illness. Ayurveda emphasizes good health and prevention and treatment of illness through lifestyle practices (such as massage, meditation, yoga, and dietary changes) and the use of herbal remedies.

HISTORY CONTINUE

The Indian Hindu mythology states four veda written by Aryans

Rig veda

Sam veda

Yajur veda

Atharva veda

The ayurveda is said to be an upaveda ( part ) of atharva veda. Veda is name of Hindus holy book.

3

CHARAKA SAMHITA (1900 B.C) is the first recorded book with the concept of practice of ayurveda. Charaka is also referred to as the “Father of Medicine”. Charaka was the first physician to present the concept of digestion, metabolism and immunity.

SUSHRUTA SAMHITA (600 B.C) was the next ayurvedic literature that has special emphasis on surgery “ Father of surgical medicine”.

Charaka samhita describes 341 plants and plant products used in medicine. Sushruta samhita described 395 medicinal plants, 57 drugs of animal origin, 4 minerals and metals as therapeutic agents. The Charaka Samhita is the oldest known Hindu text on Ayurveda (life sciences), and it was followed by the Sushruta Samhita. Except for some topics and their emphasis, both discuss many similar subjects such as General Principles, Pathology, Diagnosis, Anatomy, Sensorial Prognosis, Therapeutics, Pharmaceutics and Toxicology.

Theory and basic concepts of Ayurveda

Panchamahabhuta siddhanta

Tridosha theory

Rasa –Guna- Virya-Vipaka-prabhava sidhhanta.

Ayurveda is based on three fundamental principles

6

Panchamahabhuta Siddhanta

Pancha mahabhuta is a Sanskrit term meaning "five great elements" and is used to describe the five great elements that are said to be present in everything in the universe, including in the human body. These elements are as follows:

Akasha (ether)

Vayu (air)

Tej (fire)

Jala (water)

Prithvi (earth)

This principle is the foundation of Ayurvedic philosophy and believes that five elements make everything in this universe & universe itself. The body has perfect balance of these elements and when the balance is disturbed, an unhealthy condition develops which we call as illness.

Akash means having a cavity with freedom to move. Ether element is related with various actions like expansion, vibration, non-resistance. Sensory organ related to ether element is ear as it is hollow and transmits the sound waves. Air is the great element that shows a sense of movement. Vayu or air initiates & directs motion or movement. Air element keeps the body in constant motion. Air element is mobile, dry, light, cold and subtle in nature. Its main action is to do any kind of movement. All various forms of transformation including digestion of food are carried out by fire element.  Perception of light is carries out by this tanmatra. Fire element is hot, sharp, light, dry and subtle. Various functions carried out by this element are penetration, digestion of food, and transformation of thoughts, intelligence and perception of light. Water shows important quality of binding. This binding nature helps in forming different structures in the body as it binds the 2 cells together. The water element exhibits qualities like cool, liquid, dull soft, and sliminess. Its main actions are cohesiveness and adhesiveness. Prithvi, It is solid, dense, gross and very hard. It is related to all solid and hard structures that show shape – e.g. bones, muscles, teeth and nails. The Earth element is responsible for giving structure, shape and strength to the body.  Qualities of earth element are heavy, dull, dense, hard and gross.

7

Tri-dosha theory

The five elements combine in the human body to form three life forces or energies, called doshas.

Vata: Air and ether principle of movement , physical and mental function. Directs nerve impulses, circulation, respiration, elimination and degeneration.

Pitta: Fire and water principle of digestion, absorption, assimilation and transformation.

transforms food into nutrients, metabolism in the digestive system.

Kapha: water and earth principle of structure and solidity –bonding, cohesiveness, growth and lubrication. Protection of the brain and back bone.

In Ayurvedic philosophy, the five elements combine in pairs to form three dynamic forces or interactions called doshas. Dosha means "that which changes."In Ayurveda, dosha is also known as the governing principles as every living thing in nature is characterized by the dosha. Vata is composed of the ether and air. It is responsible for movement in the body and mind. It governs breathing, tissue movements, controlling the pulse of heart, blinking and controlling the nervous system of the body. Pitta is responsible for metabolism in our body. Pitta controls the digestion, Absorption, nutrition and body temperature. Kapha is made of earth and water in our body and is characterized by fluidity, strength and nourishment. When imbalanced, it produces heaviness and phlegm in the body. Balanced tri- dosha means a healthy person.

Strategies to balance your Doshas

1 TO BALANCE VATA:

MINIMIZE TIME SPENT ON YOUR TECH DEVICES.

EAT SEASONALLY.

SLOW DOWN THE PACE OF YOUR LIFE.

SLOW DOWN YOUR WORKOUT.

2 TO BALANCE PITTA:

MINIMIZE COFFEE.

EAT COOLING FOODS.

PRACTICE SPORTS WITHOUT A COMPETITIVE MINDSET.

INDULGE IN A LITTLE SELF-CARE.

3 TO BALANCE KAPHA:

COMMIT TO DAILY EXERCISE.

CREATE MORE SPONTANEITY IN YOUR LIFE.

MINIMIZE DAIRY AND CARBS SUCH AS WHEAT IN YOUR DIET.

TRY DRY BRUSHING.

Turn everything off one hour before bedtime, which will help to calm the nervous system impacted by vata. In the winter, abstain from eating raw veggies and smoothies as they increase vata. Favor warm spiced soups and stews, cooked fruits, and warm grains for breakfast and warm, spiced milks. Avoid multitasking and create boundaries regarding answering emails. Choose one thing and do it slowly, which will increase your focus and productivity. Avoid too many quick sports such as running. Instead, go for a sustained, longer walk out in nature. Try a more slowly paced yoga class. Coffee is a pitta-aggravating drink. If you do drink coffee, drink it with milk, which helps to cool the acidic heat of coffee. Grains such as cream of wheat and oats will bring cooling sustenance to your fire. Eat leafy green salads and avoid too much red meat, which is also pitta-provoking. Enjoy a bath with lavender and rose essential oils to soothe your soul. Try to eat lots of vegetables and less meat. Add warming spices such as ginger, cinnamon, and black pepper to your food. Use only raw honey as a sweetener to your foods and tea.

It also reveals the mental and physical characteristics of people. Stimulation of a naadi enables to influence the processes of these body parts. Naadi is said to be ‘jiva sakshi’ ie the evidence of life. The pulse is tested in the left hand for women and the right hand for men.

A case report of Autoimmune Bullous pemphigoid skin disease managed with Ayurvedic Treatment

A 40‑year‑old male of autoimmune bullous skin disorder (Visphoṭaka) who failed to respond to allopathic medicines and was subsequently treated with Ayurvedic medicines and achieved complete remission.

Arogyavardhini Rasa was the medication used to treat his condition and it has choleretic effect and it is is scientifically proven.

Due to the side effects and the high cost of conventionally used anti-inflammatory drugs, patients are increasingly using complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) modalities of treatment.

Autoimmune bullous diseases are a group of rare, acquired disorders characterized by overlapping features, resistance to treatment, and potential fatality. They need quick and proper management to avoid fatal complications. While he working in Brass industry was presented with two months history of persistent extensive and severe stomatitis with recurrent oral ulcers leading to difficultyin oral food intake even in liquid form.

18

Analysis of data

a, c, e, g Prior to Ayurvedic management showing active lesions over abdomen, hand, thigh and leg. (b, d, f, h) 30 days after showing complete remission

Here the patient had severe spread of the disease and did not improve with the conventional treatment modalities. Because of the secondarily infected skin erosions, life‑threatening sepsis had developed
