Dax claimed that he should be autonomous to make his own decisions about his care. But, remember, the principle of Autonomy states that “rational” and “competent” individuals are autonomous. Also, consider that true autonomy allows us to make our own decisions, even if they are wrong or lead to mistakes. On the other hand, perhaps Dax was acting out of fear. He remarked that he didn’t want to be “blind and crippled.” Did Dax truly understand what his life may be like as a person with physical disabilities? Imagine that you are a medical professional dealing with Dax’s case. What would you do? Explain your decision. Be sure to draw on our class materials in your answer (you can always use ethical theories or principles to help. And, feel free to use this week’s readings too!).
