This assignment requires

• reading one specific article, by Joelle Renstrom, “What happened when I made my students turn off their phones”

• searching for another article and for related information,

• and answering to some questions (in SurveyMonkey, the SFU-licensed version, which stores answers in Canada).

Accompanying this assignment, students are asked whether they agree to share their assignment

responses for educational research purposes. Agreeing to share the answers for the purpose of

the research study is much appreciated but it is completely voluntary and it will not affect the

grade in any way.

Additional documents are provided. One jpg document outlines deadlines and workshops

associated to this assignment and to the Argumentative Essay writing assignment (stages 1 and

2), as these assignments and workshops are interconnected.

A second document provides a preview of all the questions that you are asked as part of this

assignment in SurveyMonkey.

The description of the reading and searching that must be done for this assignment, and the

questions that must be answered, together with a more detailed description of the research

study is all included in a SurveyMonkey questionnaire, where you submit your answers.

You are recommended to prepare your answers outside SurveyMonkey (in any text editor)

and keep a copy for your records, and then copy paste your answers in the survey tool.

This assignment is interconnected to other class activities. An “Information Literacy” workshop, led

by Holly Hendrigan, Liaison Librarian for the Faculty of Applied Sciences will take place on week #4 to

support the preparation of this assignment. This assignment is also useful in preparation for the

Argumentative Essay writing assignment.

ASSIGNMENT AND WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES

“Information literacy” can be defined as “a set of abilities requiring individuals to recognize when

information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed

information." (American Library Association).

Information literacy is an essential skill in information age; students and all us of need strategies

to evaluate the credibility of the information that is found.

This assignment seeks to reinforce three "Frames" of the ACRL Framework for Information

Literacy, http://www.ala.org/acrl/standards/ilframework . The "Frames" or concepts we will

discuss are: Authority is Constructed and Contextual, Searching as Strategic Exploration, and

Scholarship as Conversation
