Be like an Authentic leader

You don’t have to be born with specific traits of leader?

You don’t have to be at the top of your organization?

You don’t have to wait for someone’s tap on your shoulder?

“All of us have the spark of leadership in us, whether it is in business, in government, or as a nonprofit volunteer. The challenge is to understand ourselves well enough to discover where we can use our leadership gifts toserve others.”

Discovering your authentic leadership

Commitment to develop yourself

Be responsible to develop yourself

Devote yourself to realize your lifetime potential ( ex; Musicians, athletes)

How they perform

Authentic leaders act on the self awareness by practicing their values and principles, sometimes at substantial risk to themselves.

They balance their motivations and goals carefully.

They keep a strong supporting team around them.

They focus on long term results rather than short term and fast results.

Martin Luther king,jr.

“A man of conscience can never be a consensus leader…he doesn’t take a stand in order to search for consensus. He is ultimately a molder of consensus. I’ve always said a measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and moments of convenience, but where he stands in moments of challenge and moments of controversy…I’m much more concerned about keeping favour with these principles than keeping favor with a person who may misunderstand a position I take.”

Integrating Your Life by Staying Grounded

One of the greatest challenge leaders face.

To lead a balanced life– work, family, community and friends should be brought up together so that you can be the same person in each element.

Being authentic means maintaining a sense of self no matter where you are, stated by John Danhoe, president of Ebay Marketplaces. Also he warned, “The world can shape you, if you let it. To have a sense of yourself as you live, you must make conscious choices. Sometimes the choices are really hard, and you make a lot of mistakes.”

Integration takes discipline.

Authentic leaders are constantly aware of the importance of being grounded.

Time with families and friends, physical exercise, engaging in spiritual activities and community service are useful in being an effective leader.

Empowering People to Lead

The key to a successful organization is having empowered leaders at all levels, including those who have no direct reports.

CEO Anne Mulcahy of Xerox is one good example. Xerox was in debt with 18 million dollars, share price was in free fall and to make it worse, the SEC was investigating the company’s revenue. Everyone was already questioning her capabilities since she doesn’t have financial experience. The relationships she had built over 25 years, her understanding of the company and her credibility as an authentic leader was the reason that everyone went extra mile to help her.

All throughout the crisis, people in Xerox were empowered by Mulcahy to step up and lead in order to restore the company. So in the end, her leadership enabled the Xerox company to avoid bankruptcy.

Like Mulcahy, all leaders have to deliver bottom line results by creating a virtuous circle in which results reinforce the effectiveness of their leadership.

For authentic leaders, there are special rewards like the pleasure of leading a group of people to achieve a worthy goal.
