Thank you for
joining us today for this edition of Dr. James
Dobson family talk. I'm Luann crane here with Ryan Dobson along
with our host, Dr. James Dobson
and DR. And Ryan, I cannot help but notice that wherever you
go these days, when you take a
stand for truth, you'll soon be branded
as someone who is intolerant or fanatical
or even hateful. Hey, tell me about it. Here at Family Talk, we do feel a calling to do what we can
to make people more aware of the trap
of moral relativism because it is very important what we
believe and how we live, and especially how we
raise our children. It touches every
area of life, from the depravity that we see in the
media every day to a politically correct
curriculum being taught in the
public schools and everything in-between. It is evident
now more than ever before that
we're living in what might be called a post Christian society that will inflame a
lot of people too, but that's the
way I read it. I pay attention to what's going on in the culture. And it looks to
me like that even many
Christians really don't know what
that means. A referring to a post
Christian society. So let me define
it quickly. A post Christian or
postmodern society is based on a
philosophy that says, there is no God, there are no rules. And if he doesn't exist, there are no
ultimate guidelines. And I hear that
point of view, especially in the
popular culture more and more and it
does cause me concern. So basically anything
goes, anything goes. Now. What that means
is there is no true, There's no right or wrong. There's nothing
evil or good. There's nothing
moral or immoral. Each person makes up
his own value system. As the scripture
says, judges 21, 25. Every man did what was
right in his own eyes. And I believe that
we're rapidly becoming a society dominated by
that point of view. And it's
disastrous because you walk away from
God in that way and there are consequences
of it were moving in that
direction at breakneck pace toward that kind of
Godless worldview. Now, Ryan, you're more in touch with the younger
generation than I am. Tell me if what
I just said is more characteristic of
those who are xors, are those who are
coming into adult life, perhaps at,
through their 30s, then it is those of us who've lived
a little longer. I think if you
extend it into those that are in
their 30s and 40s, I think it's about
the same four people in your generation.
I wouldn't say that. I said you definitely had a better handle on truth. There was a standard by which you judge
something to be right or wrong. But when you drop down
to my generation, the current administration
that's rolling our White House
and younger. Now, a lot of people are making it up as
they go along. His a profound statement, cause of where
we're headed. If you don't
have a standard, if you don't have a set of moral values that
are inevitably true, then you're wandering
through a minefield. And Satan can do all kinds of
things with that. Well, at that point
it's majority rule. And unfortunately there's a whole lot more
wolves than sheep. And we could be in
for some scary times. I'm glad that today we're
going to be hearing from someone who's very knowledgeable
of what we're talking about and who's in a position to help us explain these concepts in, in an enlightening way. Yes, Our guest by recording is a man
who I think has good a fix on what
we're talking about is anybody in
Christian them today, especially when he's
talking to young people. And Ryan, he will
begin his presentation today by describing
two definitions of the word tolerance. They have very
different meanings and I'm not going
to try to explain them now because
they're discussed very thoroughly and what
we're about to hear. But I do urge our listeners to listen
carefully to Josh, make Dao as he makes this important
distinction. Doctor, this is one
of the most carefully and well articulated
explanations at this point
I've ever heard. In fact, I quickly passed along copies of
this message to all three of my young sons knowing that they
would get pummeled with this information
and I wanted them to be equipped to address it
in the school system. So I hope we've peaked parents interests
to make sure that their children are
aware of this and two of them are in
college Absolutely. Where they do tend to hear the message
of tolerance. That's true. Let me go ahead
and quickly introduce Josh McDowell. He heads
appropriately enough that Josh McDowell
ministry, he's been closely
affiliated with Campus Crusade for
Christ since 960. For Josh has spoken to over 10 million
young people in a 113 countries
over the years. He's written over
a 115 books. I can retire Just thinking about
it here now is Josh McDowell talking to the Campus Crusade
for Christ staff at their headquarters
in Orlando, Florida, right here on Dr. James Dobson
and family talk. We are going through this very moment that
we're sitting here, the fastest
cultural change in the history of America. And I would say 95% of believers are missing it. They're seen
indications of it, but not what is
really happening. I'm going to address that issue because
it's become an a whole foundation
of having to speak out on
right from wrong. And what I'm talking
about is what has become the number one
virtue in America. The number one
virtue in America has become the
number one threat, or one of the top
two or three threats to the cause of Christ. Can anyone tell me what that number one virtue is used to be justice,
not anymore. Justice is no longer
the number one virtue. It's been relegated
way down the ladder. What is the number one virtue that we
face in America? Anyone? Tolerance? Tolerance. And
here's the problem. So many kids come
home from school. And mom will say, well, would you talk about today are what went well, we talked about tolerance. Oh, that's wonderful. We need to be Tyler's. No, it is not wonderful. And undermines everything that you believe it. Now somebody is
sitting there and I can just look
in your icing. Wait a minute,
Josh, you're off base knowing that you
listen carefully. The reason I'm saying What I'm saying is this is that we're singing off to different song sheets. You see we're in a
transitional period where there's two distinct
definitions of tolerance. One by parents and people
our age right here. The other buy kits. And what has been
ingrained and talk to our
kids is totally different than what is in your mind as a parent. And let me explain that. Pretty much here. You had been conditioned by what is referred to as
traditional tolerance. It is now referred to
as negative tolerance. Negative tolerance. Negative tolerance
would be defined by the Random House unabridged dictionary,
where it says, tolerance is to recognize and respect
others beliefs, practices without
sharing them, or to bear or put up with someone or something
that especially light. That is how almost
everyone in this room has been
condition with tolerance. Now that is referred to as negative tolerance. In our circles we would say and
think we're very godly for saying that and very righteous saying, Well, you know, you're
to love the center, but the hate, the sin. You say that in most university
classrooms in America, and you will be
labeled a heretic, a bigot, and intolerant. If you had the
gall to say one of the most intolerant
statements today that you are to love the sinner,
but hate the sin. And the reason
is we're singing off a different
song sheet. This is so critical
that dr. Hristov good goal in an article called The trouble
with toleration says, toleration is the
ultimate and only generally accepted
litmus test of morality. No other single category, not justice, not equality, not even freedom has one such wide
moral support. In the Western world.
We say things like, you know, I love you, but I don't believe in
what you stand for. I love you, but I don't believe in your lifestyle. Now, the way we pick condition that is righteous and
that is tolerant. Under the new song
sheet that is so intolerant,
It's pathetic. Now there's a new
tolerance out and on. The new tolerance
is called positive tolerance over against
what you've been conditioned in
negative tolerance. Positive tolerance
basically says this. Every single
individual's beliefs, values, lifestyle, and truth claims
are equal. Now let me repeat it. Every single
individual's beliefs, values, lifestyle, and truth claims
are all equal. In other words,
there is no In the new buzzword
is no hierarchy. In other words,
there's no truth greater than
another truth. There is no belief greater than
another belief. There's no value
greater than another value
or lifestyle. Because the moment you say that your lifestyle is better at somebody else's lifestyle
that has hierarchy. And today that is labeled bigotry intolerance. Because you're
seeing there is hierarchy or pure middle. When it comes to
values, beliefs, truth claims,
or lifestyle. All individuals
beliefs, values, lifestyles and truth
claims are equal. For example, I make
the statement, I believe Jesus Christ
is the Son of God. This young lady
over here says no, after seeing all
the good works and everything else
helping children, I believe Ronald McDonald
is the Son of God. Now we laugh at that,
but listen carefully. Under the Constitution. We both have an equal
right to hold it. But under tolerance,
both are equal. You see the difference.
The new definition for bigotry and
phonetics. Does this. The phonetic or big? It is no longer a person with excessive religious
or quasi-religious and usually
mistaken enthusiasm for a certain
system of beliefs. But one who
chooses some form of hierarchy is a big hit. In other words,
you say there's a lifestyle greater
than another lifestyle. There's a truth greater
than another truth, there's a value greater
than another value. That's bigotry today.
And that's intolerance. Fanaticism, and heresy. Dr. Frederick W. Hill, a school administrator of the National
Convention, said, it is the mission of public schools not the
tolerate intolerance. Because if you tolerate intolerance, you're
being intolerant. And you're going to see
what I mean by that. We look at
people, say what, you are so inconsistent, You're not be intolerant. Well, if they're
tolerant, if most people in culture is tolerant towards
you with what you believe being
intolerant. I said to my son.
I said Sean. And they taught you to be tolerant of the
intolerant. He said No. I said
That's right, son. I said they
taught you to be tolerant of the
tolerant and giving you permission to be intolerant of
the intolerant. He said Dad, that's right. They said none of my
friends understand that. I said That's right. And what he was
saying that if we're not
intolerant of the intolerant than
we are not be intolerant and
were bigots. All truth is relative
to the individual. Under positive tolerance. All truth is equal
because it's only individual expression and opinion, belief. Because an objective
god has been removed from Western
civilization thought. This is why it a day
they say you don't have morality. You
have opinions. That's another new
buzzword, opinions. Now, here's a basic
difference between negative tolerance and
positive tolerance. Under negative tolerance, the word was permission. Whether the gays,
lesbians are what we want permission from society to live our
lifestyle and peace. And we say,
okay, You can't, we don't agree
with you, but you have permission
to do it. Under positive tolerance.
It's added a word. Now. It's not only
permission, but praise. And the new phrase is
permission and praise. In other words, we not only want your permission, we demand your praise. And if you do not give us praise than your intolerant,
and you're a bigot. This is why Dr. RM hair, a philosopher,
put it this way. He said, tolerance is
a readiness to respect other people's ideas as if they were your own. And under positive
tolerance, if you do not give praise to another
person's beliefs, values, lifestyle
or truth claims. As you do your own, then you are in tolerant. And a bigot. You see it's totally opposite of what most of us
condition with. But when our kids come
home and say, Oh, we talked about tolerance in almost every situation. It's positive tolerance. But we are responding
There's parents with had been conditioned
with negative tolerance. We say, oh,
that's wonderful. When it undermines
every thing that we believe is like
Steven Conn said in liberalism and
the idea of tolerance. He said, They also desired to be esteemed in
this choice by the community and to even when the applause
against the will, so to speak of,
of the fans. What he is saying is
this. If we do not applaud other people's
lifestyles, beliefs, values, and truth claims
as we do our own, then you're a bigot
and you're intolerant. And then as kinda Stern, dr. Stern writing
an article called battling bigotry
on the campus. In writing to the
university presidency, said we must make
the university quo comfortable for
all its members. In other words,
no matter what the lifestyle or what, we must not only
get permission, we must give praise. And they must feel comfortable that
what they're doing, their lifestyle,
their belief, their value, their
truth claim is equal in value to anyone
else in the campus. That's called
positive tolerance. Chuck Carlson is novel called Gideon's
torch, hit on it. Chuck has won a few
people that really understand what's
happening and culture and can read it. Emily Guinean is a new attorney general
nominee in the story, and a conservative senator and the committee
is grilling her. Truth, sir Guinean said
her eyes sparkling. Now only offensive is when a government
sees to it that every individual
can enjoy his or her full and
equal opportunity when every man and
woman following the dictates
of conscience. Not just tolerated but respected in their
lifestyle choices. When bigotry that is seen, one lifestyle is great, another one values
create another. When bigotry is banished from our common life, every single
individual's beliefs, values, truth claims, and lifestyles are equal. That's called
positive targets. This is not a conspiracy. Please understand that. It's not a group
of evil men and women getting
together and saying we're going to destroy evangelical Christianity and the Mormons and Muslims and everyone else. No, this is not. And everybody likes
to find a conspiracy. It's not a conspiracy. Know, there's a
lot of people taking advantage of it.
I don't blame them. There's many people taken advantage of what's
happened historically. I think there's
several basic reasons. There's many, but
several basic ones of how we got the
positive tolerance. One is a natural
progression of history to where
we are today. Not a conspiracy going all the way back to the 13th century in Italy, you have a video here, say of the world,
of history. God, the Creator God. Western civilizations
at the top, created man is
at the bottom. Along came the
Renaissance. In a Renaissance
elevated man about a quarter of the way and brought God down about a
quarter of the way. And the Renaissance
probably wouldn't have
that great of an impact if
it hadn't been followed by the
enlightenment, the age of reason. Man is the master
of his soul. Man through
reasoning can solve all the problems, understand life,
everything. And with the
enlightenment, man was elevated up
to about halfway and God was elevated down
in Western thought. Then later on. And there are many other
factors plane here, but then came
of all things, the Industrial Revolution. And the Industrial
Revolution said, we don't really need God. Look at the
great exploits, look at the great
things man can do. And when the
Industrial Revolution, philosophically
and everything, man was elevated another quarter up to
three quarter and God was elevated down to a quarter
from the bottom. And then came Darwinism. They said, Look,
we don't even need God to determine the origin of man
or the universe. And in Western thought, God fell off
the screen and man was elevated to the
position the creator. And all sudden philosophically
and universities that run everything. It caught up with us.
And also and say, wait a minute, there is no objective God which has always been the
basis of truth. There's only me
and so therefore all truth is relative. There is no objective
truth to appeal to. And if all truth
is relative them truth is an
opinion of band. Therefore, all
truth is equal. And whatever they
determine, moralities, just different
opinions of man because there
is no objective basis for truth, which you need
for morality. And to me, much of this is a progression of
history over the years. Now I've given over
22000 talks at close to 1000 universities in 83 countries
including Texas. And so I have a little background to make some of these statements up until four or five years
ago in universities. Or first let me ask you, who is the number
one heretic and universities today? Who's the number
one big hit? Anyone? Christian who evangelical are
evangelists, say the street
evangelists, we refer to that the
street evangelists, someone like myself coming in about four or
five years ago, up until then, this is the way you
were heckle me. I don't believe
that proved to me that Jesus
is the Son of God. I don't believe crisis
raised my debt. I don't think God exists. Substitutes. Your Haeckel today.
The moment you say, cheeses as a way,
the truth and life, they won't say, I
don't believe that. I don't think
Jesus, Son of God, they'll say what
rate they have to say that you're
a beginner. You have no right to say that you're
intolerant. The issue of the
statement is not the key, the
truthfulness of it. It's the issue is style. What right do you
have to say it? You're saying
there's one truth or lifestyle higher
than another? Yes. You're a bigot. You're intolerant.
Salvation is found and no one else. What right do you
have to say that C, 789 years ago, you wouldn't heard
that the issue is within would've been well, I
don't believe that. What about blah, but
what about Buddha? Now is what rights
you have to say that you're
intolerant. There's been a complete
epistemological mean, a shift in the
source of truth and epistemological shift
in Western thought. It's now just be fleshed out a human and women better remember what
I'm talking about. Here's, that's something that's
going to happen. It has all ready happen. All we're seeing now
are the workings of it. There has been a
complete shift. And I talked to so many
Christian leaders and I've talked to people
within crusade even. And they'll say, oh Josh, you're getting
upset over nothing. Look, I have
faith in America. I had one liter
say, well, look at all the Republicans were elected and I say,
yeah, look at him. America won't
stand with us. They'll rise up a senior for getting
one thing. As far as I know in the
history of America, it's a first time we've
had a sociological, anthropological
change based upon an epistemological
shift of truth. It's never
happened before in America as far as I know. And I cannot find any
time in history where an epistemological shift
was ever reversed. Rationalism, humanism, enlightenment, Darwinism. Now. And if God Terry's enough, in a number of years, you will look back that tolerance
the same way. People look back
to humanism, rationalism, enlightenment,
Darwinism, everything. It'll be equal
to all that. So we better wake up. We're facing something
we have never faced before in the history of American Western world. And that is a cultural
change based upon epistemological
shift of truth. And that makes it a
whole different box. Well, I think you can see why we so strongly
urge you to stay with us today for
this edition of Dr. James Dobson family
talk hearing from our guest,
Josh McDowell. That is a rather
sobering message, but Dr. dogs, and he
does not end there. There's a whole lot
more content to present and
we'll be hearing the balance of
that next time. Luann, you said at the top of the program that the first time you
heard this recording, you made copies of it in send it to your
three sons. And you did that
because this is a message that's
desperately needed that this time, both the content
and his delivery, there's something
that Josh can do to relate to his audience that makes young people especially
sit up and listen. And I would encourage every parent to make sure they're high
schoolers hear it. Well. Our listeners
can certainly hear the passion
in his voice. He feels this subject so deeply and so do
I hope they hear the passion in
mind because our society is changing rapidly from a
value system. It's based on the
Judeo-Christian precepts and the ethic that's been essentially characteristic
of our culture from the days of the
founding fathers and even before. And at the core of that philosophical
shift is the belief that God
does not exist. That he has been
ruled out of the equation I use to
describe it this way. There are two
value systems. One of them might
be called God is, and the other one
is God isn't. And that changes
everything. If a pregnancy
is inconvenient, you can kill a baby. How can you do
that if you know God is and God
is the Creator. So babies, it changes
everything when you shift from one value
system to another. And that change happens
so suddenly that a lot of times we as
Christians don't even notice that
it's taking place. I just looked at the clock and we've been
pretty wordy today and her introduction
then wrap around. So we're going
to have to bring this program to a
conclusion here, but we're going to
pick up tomorrow with the other half
of this presentation. And to our
listeners I say, please don't miss
it. That's right. Will be Plane Part 2 of tolerating the
intolerable tomorrow. Thanks for joining
us, god bless, and we'll see you
again next time for another edition of Dr. James Dobson family top.
Audio Transcript: Tolerating the Intolerable II
This is Dr. James Dobson. These family talk, I'm Ryan Dobbs in here
with lewin crane, along with our host,
psychologist and best-selling author,
Dr. James Dobson. As today we continue
a message on the subject of tolerance
and intolerance. Well, the program
we heard last time was the first part
of what was for me, a very disturbing message was delivered by Josh, make down a great
friend of ours in josh said that
our definition of tolerance and
intolerance in this culture has changed dramatically
over time. And especially in
the last year 2, it's become an avalanche. Picking up
speed, isn't it? I mean, it really is. And today the greatest
good is to be tolerant of every opinion in every possible
philosophy. They're all okay,
they're all equal regardless of
how extreme they are. Except of course, those with Biblical
underpinnings. So the greatest evil today seems to be
anything associated with the Judeo-Christian
system of values or political
correctness. Little Doctor. Yeah, absolutely.
Right. Because we've all seen time and
time again where anybody can say
anything they want except for
Christians. I mean, if we
say something it from a biblical
perspective, we are branded as bigots or intolerant,
like you said. Well, that seems to be the wave of the future in Western nations
to the world is turned upside down. And what emerges from
this redefinition is a post Christian
environment that threatens
everything we believe, everything Jesus
taught in, certainly everything
that we're trying to teach our kids. And that's what we're going to be hearing
about today in the second half
of Josh's message. This is, as we said, a very disturbing message. But man, what a
powerful one, what an important
understanding that we said this last time and let
me repeat it. That this is a recording that you can get
from that family talk that you really
ought to send to your younger
members of the family. And they would
love it if you just posted a link on their Facebook
page or send them that link in an e-mail
or a text message. A little bit more
about Josh McDowell. He heads up Josh McDowell ministry and He's been tied to Campus Crusade
for Christ since 1964. He has spoken to
literally millions of young people in
over a 100 countries. He's written over
a 115 books, including a few that
tied directly to this topic like
beyond belief, to convictions and
the unshakable truth. We ended the program last time with just
getting into some of the implications of the positive
tolerance mindset. And so we're going to pick it up as he continues to explore the impact that this philosophy is having. So here now is
Josh McDowell on Dr. James Dobson,
family talk. Many view here I've
taken courses in comparative
religion I have and comparative
philosophy. And the purpose
of the study is a stated in the handbooks
and everything, the student guides
and all was you had to take this course
in order to evaluate, to place a value on the truth claims of
different religions. Are they true,
are they false or what different
philosophies? You can't study
that way anymore. Another implication
is this, and we better
wake up to it. Francis Shaffer came
onto the scene and said we no longer live in a Judeo-Christian culture, meaning Judeo Old Testament Christian
New Testament, that the ethics
and morality of society are derived from the Old and
New Testament. He said, We now live in a post Judeo
Christian culture. Well, I believe if
Francis Shaffer here, he would say what
I've been saying, Oh, we better wake up. We no longer live in a post
Judeo-Christian culture. We live in an anti
Judeo-Christian culture. Another implication is that tolerance
eliminates justice. Say what? Yes. Tolerance and justice
cannot co-exist. Tolerance is the
enemy of justice and justice undermines everything that
tolerance stands for. Say, Come on, Josh,
How can you say that? Very easily,
men and women. Justice says, there is a moral basis for discerning right
from wrong. Without a moral basis to discern right
from wrong, you cannot have justice. Tolerances. There
is no moral basis. If you say there's
a moral basis, it totally undermines
tolerance. And so tolerance and
justice cannot co-exist. For a few months, maybe
23 years maximum. You use that here,
the two terms used. But already you see
a tapering off. You hardly ever hear
somebody really appeal to justice anymore. It's tolerance. It's tolerance.
Positive pellets. Then tolerance eliminates
moral indignation. Unless that moral
indignation is against intolerance. You see if all
values, beliefs, lifestyles, and truth
claims are equal, you rule out
moral indignation because a moment
to express moral indignation, you expressing intolerance. That now in many
places publicly you express moral
indignation and your chastised for it. Because you're saying
there's hierarchy. It eliminates courage. Courage is good
people doing that which is right within a culture willing
to die for? Well, if everything
is equal, truth is equal to
heresy, whatever. If all values, beliefs, lifestyles are all equal. What does their
drama of caries for except the courage
for tolerance. Then tolerance
eliminates convictions. Price. There's no
truth worth defending except tolerance. Because
all truth is equal. Ck just a remark, tolerance as a virtue of a man without convictions. Wolfgang Von Goethe said, Why did I seek the
past so urine ugly. If I should not sure
with my brother. You see there's an erosion of confidence
that truth can even be discovered in Western civilization
and now East. Because God
objective truth is passed off the scene, tooth no longer seems
worth protecting. Accept the truth
of tolerance. This is why down
in Baltimore when young Brian
McConnell, 15 years old in
the middle school, their grandmother
died and he asked his mom if he could
make the tombstone. And she said yes, so
it's shop at school. He made a large
cross, he cut it out, sanded it, varnished,
it stained, and you want to put
the crossbar on. And the teacher
immediately stopped them, said You can't do that
to a 15 year-old kid. And later the school
explained it this way. If we allowed you to
put the crossbar on it, be intolerance to take
it home and do it. What do we do? I believe we need to pursue truth. You shall know the truth, and the two should
set you free. But think of this,
that very act. In a matter of months
and several years, we'll label you a
bigot and intolerant. You see right now most of you are the good guys. Are staff on the campuses, are the good guys
more or less. Directors and
churches are the good guys, the community. Than 36 to 60 months, they will be
that bad guys. Because we no longer live in a post
Judeo-Christian culture. We live in an anti
Judeo-Christian culture. And we better
equip our staff, kids and our grandkids
to deal with that. If they're going to
survive. Bill, What's the number 1 verse
historically has been quoted by Christians
and the church. What would it be? Do you think? John? John 316? Do you
know what it is now? You know what it is
now? Judge. Not that you'd be not judged. You think how many
times your judge not that John 316 anymore. Judge. That the EU not be judge because you
if you Jeju being intolerant and most
pastors agree with me. Now that's a number 1 verse
quoted by Christians. Judge, not that
you'd be not judged. We must have firm beliefs
so that they become convictions, feelings,
and beliefs. You will not survive with them in a
tolerant society. We must develop
convictions. Then. This is one of the key factors that the scriptures
never call me. To be tolerant. Under
positive tolerance, you show me one place
in the scriptures. Now the closest have
negative tolerance or pi B first
Corinthians 13, love endures all things. That has nothing to do with positive
tolerance. I can not adhered to, endorse or
propagate tolerance as it's believed today. And still name the
name Jesus Christ. And stay true to
the Word of God. The Bible does not call
us to be tolerant. It calls us, this will be the mark
of the crushed. It cause us to be
loving. To be loving. Jesus said, don't be
tolerant your enemies. He said, love
your enemies. Love those who
hate you, do good and to those
who hate you. And one of the
greatest marks of the believer will be love. Just love for the
body of Christ. So many people make
a lot out of that. We'll look, even sinners
love each other. The real mark would not just be our love
for each other, but our love for
those at the world. The centers love
each other. And Jesus was so
clear on that. And look, we are
commanded to be tolerant, are commanded
to be loving. The opposite
of intolerance is not tolerance,
it's love. Now, in Micah 68, might get the prophet
said something. That is probably
almost more relevant today than a hundreds of years ago
when he said it, Micah 68, you've
all heard it. What does the Lord, your
God require of you? But to act justly
and exercise loving kindness and all conditioned by walking humbly before the Lord. Mom, dad, staff member. The next 36 to 60 months you do either
one of those things, act justly or exercise
a loving kindness, you will be
labeled a bigoted intolerant in a heretic. If you exercise Christian
love or justice, if you do either
thing that the Lord, your God requires of us, We will become
the bad guys. Say arch. This is two
radical, no, it isn't. Think it through. We are commanded to love. And yet if I stood up and almost every church in Orlando in America
and Western world. And the first thing
I say when I walk to the podium is
I will not be tolerant of merely be labeled a heretic
by believers. And here's the
phrase I hear. You need to be
more Christ-like. You need to be Josh. You need to be
more Christ-like. You need to be
tolerant too. What are you
talking about? If Jesus Christ, we're
here today in flesh, walking the face
of the earth, the United Nations
would immediately label him the most
intolerant man, the face of the earth. And it wouldn't
take 33 years render crucify,
be crucified. It wouldn't take 33 months to be more Christ-like. In John four. Jesus loved the
woman at the well. But how intolerant he was according to
tolerance today, he said to the woman,
Go call your husband. She said, I don't
have a husband. You expose their
lifestyle as being inferior.
Said That's right. You've had five husbands and when you're
living with now is not even
your husband, you're living in adultery. You do that in the average classroom,
America today, and you'll be
labeled a heretic, a bigot, and intolerant. What right do you
have to judge? An alternate lifestyle? And Jesus said Go
call your husband. He'd immediately be
labeled intolerant today. Emily, sit in a class, need to be more
Christ-like. Jesus, love. You see today? The philosophy of today. Is it weird to be loving? We are to set
aside truth in order to love
Jesus and never to that weird speak the truth in love and
we love truthfully. Love does not
set aside truth and truth never
sets aside love. Jesus said No,
take a statement. Saying in a
classroom in America today, you know, not what you worship, but we worship God
in spirit and truth. That claim wouldn't be I don't believe that be. What right. Do I have to say that
you're a toddler. He had no right to say
that you're a bigot. And yet if I stood up in the average church
today and said, I can not be tolerant. I'd be labeled a heretic. And immediate phrases. You gotta be more
Christ-like. Judge, not that you'd
be that you etched. So you were told to
love our enemies, love without a pa, chrissy, be devoted to one another in love.
Here's the problem. Tolerance and love
cannot co-exist. It come my cat. What does the Lord, your
God require of you, but to act justly and exercise loving kindness, tolerance and Christian
love cannot coexist. And a few exercise Christian love and
36 to 60 months, you will be the bad guy, the heretic, the big
hit him intolerant. Say, how do you say that? From the understanding
Krishna, you see tolerance says, I must be indifferent. If I see an injustice or what? I must
be indifferent. If I see a lifestyle that I believe
is detrimental, that purse, I must
be indifferent. Because the moment
I step in to change, I'm being
intolerant. I'm saying there's
a lifestyle, There's a truth value, there's a bleed
higher hierarchy. Let me illustrate that. It's very interesting
when I share this with college students in the audience,
It's unbelievable. They almost were
run to the front. And the first thing they say it was this josh, everything that
you're talking about? I've experienced
this year. So you've talked to
parents, they say or talk to
Christian leaders, all Josh, you're going,
Oh, this is a true. You talk to college
students like Josh. Everything that
you've said I've experienced this year. And illustration
eight students, I was speaking efficient
at this last summer, a music festival
in Virginia. Eight students from
a school there, That's not a
liberal school. In comparison, the
secular universities, much more conservative.
Eight students. I mean, time I walked
to the counseling tent, they must have run all
the way from the back. They beat me to
the counseling 10. And it came right
up and they say almost in one voice said, Josh, everything that you said
we've experienced, in fact, at our school. If you're accused
of intolerance, just accused before you can take another course. And I've heard this
probably a 100 times as you're 40 and take another course
to graduate, you have to take
a class and cultural sensitivity. Than one guy spoke
up and he said, Josh, I'm very
committed to Jesus. That's been the hardest
year of my life. So tell me about it. He said I'm an RA. And he said last summer, a year ago, they took all of us to a conference center
for two days. And for two days, all we heard
was tolerance. Tolerance,
tolerance, powers. They brought in gays, lesbians, pedophile,
everything. And he said You
must be tolerant. You already determined. Now here's the phrase
your kids here. You already term
what is right for you and what is
real for you. And you're not to share or impose your values
upon others, but allow others
the freedom to determine what is right for them and what is wrong with them in a
live it out, unhindered. See everyone in your
kids hear that phrase. That's under tolerance. Why do you do that?
Because all is equal. Moments. You say, Well, my value is higher
than your value, your hierarchy, and
that's intolerance and bigotry and a heresy. And he said, Josh, they started out the first day by telling us every hour you can not
change anyone. Said by the second day. Every hour they
threaten us. If we catch you trying
to change anyone. As an RA, you will
not only be fired, but I'll go on
your record and follow you the
rest of your life. They said, Josh, I
feared this entire year. Ever mentioned in the
name Jesus Christ. What does the Lord your
God require of you, but act justly and the exercise,
loving kindness. And it's coming soon where we do either one of those things
will be labeled a bigot and intolerant. You see, you cannot act justly unless you can discern right from wrong. Because doing that
which is just as living out that
which is right. You cannot please
press this. You can not exercise Christian loving
kindness unless you can discern
right from wrong. Unless you concern
right from wrong. Because love
always identifies with that which is right, and speaks out against
that which is wrong. In yet today in
our culture, we've lost the basis of discerning right
from wrong. What does the Lord, your
God require of you? But to act justly and to exercise
loving kindness. You know, maybe some of you here have
never been in a meeting where what the speaker says is
literally a wake-up call. And it is today. If we go on with life as usual, we're going to wake up in 36 to 60 my
chicken enhancing. What happened? Now this is not a Western
culture thing anymore. It's a whole world. I just came back from China, Hong Kong, other places. Same thing, unbelievable. Unbelievable. And our kids are being ingrained
in students in elementary, junior, high, high
school universities. And you take what I've
said today and you listen carefully to
people's conversations around you, young people. Now, it'll start to
fit into a pattern. And I have so many
parents say to me 23 weeks after
the misspeak, Josh, I can't believe it. It was like a puzzle
coming together. As I start to look
at my own life, my own feelings and everything, You nailed it. We are facing one of the
greatest challenges. And one reason that's one of the greatest challenges is that it's so subtle. And you understand
what I'm saying here. This undermines everything that
we believe in. You talk about
prayer, all you want. Talk about revival. We talk about
evangelism, everything. But if we let the basis
of truth, the road, everything roads with it in the lives of
our children. This is why youth workers. Now, I'm hearing something
I never heard before. Bill, I'm hearing
this. Most youth workers and things,
you'd hear this. What if we don't
resolve this, we are going to lose
this generation. Now I'm hearing
this Joshua, not only lose
this generation, we will already loss
that next generation. Take to heart
what I've shared. And I do hope we all will take to heart
what we have just heard from
Mr. Josh McDowell today on Dr. James
Dobson family talk. Dr. Dobson Ryan, as
I shared earlier, Josh has spoken
to millions of people around
the world. He obviously
has a gift for evaluating what's going on in these current times. Well, I certainly hope that young people had
been listening to what he has to say
because it is so important to
this generation. Luann and Ryan, I'm
reminded of a reference to the sons of ISI car
in the Old Testament. It's in first Chronicles
12 that says quote, they understood the times and knew what to do. There are those
who do have a clear perspective
on culture, what direction
it's moving and what the implications
are of it, and what's occurring
and what's happening. I believe Josh McDowell
is one of them. And frankly, I don't want this to be
self-serving, but this is an
area where I have very strong
convictions to, because if you just keep your eyes
open and watch, you'll hear it
in the media, in the popular culture,
in the literature. And what the kids say, what the older people say, it's out there, you can't miss it if you're
listening. I recently wrote a
novel with Kurt Bruner. It's called fatherless,
and it will actually be a trilogy when we get
finished with them. Titles are fatherless, childless, and godless. And they outline what
our society will look like in 30 years if current demographic
trends continue. And there's certain to do so because, you know, 55 million babies
have been aborted in the last 40 years and they can't
be replaced. So where we are now
is where we're going and it does apply
to this issue. I hope there's
some other sons of it's a car out there who are
paying attention. Two, it really is
a great book and you can see the
progression in our society as
you're reading it. If we're moving towards a post Christian
society where people don't recognize
or acknowledge right and wrong,
good and evil. And there's no
internal restraint that comes from knowing
there is a God. And that the wages
of sin, our death, and that there are consequences for
misbehavior. There really is
no stopping us. Well, as you can see, we feel strongly
about this issue and here in the close, let me just point you
to a couple of books. The first would be
fatherless doctor, which I just finished at midnight the other night. You thank you for
keeping me up. I highly recommend that we have that available
at Dr. James stops and.org as well as Josh McDowell is book beyond belief,
convictions. What you need to know
to help youth stand strong in the face
of today's culture. You know, Luann, the
title fatherless implies that it's
the same kind of book that I've written. I've written 82 books and they've all been
nonfiction. So you would get
the implication from fatherless
that I'm talking about how to cope with dad's not being
there and why fathers should continue to make their contribution
to the family. But it's really
not about that. It's what a world
will look like when they're fewer and
fewer committed dads, we already have 40%. The babies born today are born out of wedlock. And for the African
American community, it's over 70 percent. So this is the meaning
of fatherless. Well, it is a chilling
account, doctor, but it really puts it
into perspective in a way that people will
be able to grasp. And you can find
both those resources online that Dr. James Dobson.org or
