What tone or general attitude do you want to convey to your audience: objective, authoritative, collaborative, supportive?

What do you want your audience to know or be able to do as a result of listening to your speech?

Will your audience expect to be entertained as well as informed?

What expectations will your audience have regarding the length and format of your speech?

What is the approximate size of your audience?

What information do you have regarding the demographic makeup of your audience?

Are there cultural considerations that may influence how your audience responds to your speech?

What does the audience likely already know about this topic?

Does your audience have any preconceptions/assumptions about this topic?

In general, what is your audience’s attitude towards the topic?

What is important to the audience? What are their values?

What personal and professional traits do you have in common with your audience?

Will the audience members recognize your authority and implicitly trust your credibility? Will you have to earn their trust?

What common misconceptions will you have to correct during the course of your speech?

Will your audience have an interest in your subject matter, or will you have to generate that interest?

What particular appeals should you include in your speech to connect to the needs and interests of your audience?

Will you be targeting certain members of your audience?

What key questions will your audience expect you to answer?

What key objections are the audience members likely to make?
