At the very roots of weight regulation is the simplest of concepts—to maintain a given weight energy intake must be equal to energy output. If excessive calories are consumed or if the energy expenditure is minimized, a weight gain will result. Alternatively, a reduction in calorie consumption or increase in energy expenditure results in a loss of body weight. Yet for all the simplicity, an obesity epidemic has swept the nation as many Americans struggle in their attempts to lose weight.
1. Based on current research findings, do you support the notion that energy balance is a simple concept? Why or why not?
2. From a public health perspective, what might be done to help reverse the trend of obesity? Consider the various determinants and influences of weight. Which of these have a practical application at the population level?
