Abstract

The abstract should be written after you have completed all other sections of the paper. This is basically a summary of your topic, methods, findings, and implications of those findings.

Here is a resource that will help with writing a good abstract (includes several examples):

Writing an abstract for your research paper https://writing.wisc.edu/handbook/assignments/writing-an-abstract-for-your-research-paper/

Length: 100-150 words

Introduction

This section should provide background to the problem. Why is this problem interesting? What have other researchers done in this area? What are the expected findings? Students will need to cite past applied studies. The main objective of this section is to identify the dependent and independent variables of interest.

Length: 500 words

Significance of the study

Data and Methodology

The methodology should be based on coverage of prediction and classification topics in this course. For example, students can choose OLS regression, logistic regression, a decision tree model, or any other method covered in class that is consistent with variables included in the analysis. This section will include a brief description of the variables, the method used and its mathematical assumptions, comparison of related methods, potential pitfalls or weaknesses of the method, and analytical steps required to implement it.

Length: 1000 words

Sample description

Include source information, variables, and observations.

Description of variables

Dependent variable

Independent variables

Examples of methods

Data preprocessing: Data cleaning, missing value replacement, computing new variables, recoding variables, handling outliers etc.

Descriptive statistics

Charts

Correlation analysis

T tests

ANOVA

Simple regression

Multiple regression

Logistic regression

Association analysis

Cluster analysis

Analysis and Results

This section will include a detailed description of all preprocessing procedures performed (such as data cleaning, missing value handling, variable transformations etc.) and key findings from data analysis. A thoughtful use of well-constructed graphs and well-structured tables is highly encouraged. Students will report results from their exploratory and visual analysis of the data, followed by a description and interpretation of results from the predictive model.

Length: 1500 words

Discussion

This section will provide key conclusions based on findings reported in the Results section, and practical importance and implications of those findings. Any shortcomings or limitations of source data, methodology or other aspects of the study should be identified.

Length: 500 words

List of references

This section should include a list of all sources of information that you used for your paper. The list should be in APA style.

APA style: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_formatting_and_style_guide/reference_list_basic_rules.html

Appendix A

This is an optional section. Put any material that does not belong to other sections in appendices. You can have more than one appendix. Label the appendices in alphabetical order: Appendix A, Appendix B … and so on.
