Assignment: Achieving a Win-Win
Most students at Walden are here, in part, because of a commitment to social change. Whenever we try to improve our communities, our workplaces, or the lives of the underprivileged, we call for a shift in the status quo. This is a conflict for those who are comfortable with things the way they are.
Leadership and controversy are key to successful social change. How do these mirror each other? Is there an opportunity to extend what is being learned into a larger community context—either in your home country or abroad?
In this Assignment, you will have the opportunity to apply what you have learned to a social change project. You may use a social change project in which you are involved, or you may look at the recommended article by Milkman and describe one of the four movements of millennials: Occupy Wall Street, #MeToo, Black Lives Matter, or DACA. These scenarios will be used as a basis for looking at best practices in social change leadership and constructive controversy in a political discourse. A tie will then be made to managerial best practices and conflict management strategies espoused in this course.
To prepare for this Assignment, pay particular attention to the following Learning Resources:
· Review this week’s Learning Resources, especially:
·
· Kaczmarek, D. S. (2010). Pulling back the curtain on “See attachment”
· Conflict Management Lessons -
· Buschlen, E. L., & Reusch, J. (2016). The assessment of service – “See attachment”
· Johnson, D. W., & Johnson, R. T. (2014). Constructive controversy as a means – “See attachment”
To complete your Assignment, compose a cohesive document that addresses the following:
· Compare the seven Cs of leadership to Hagemann and Stroope’s (2012) managerial tools to address conflict.
· How well do conflict management tools and strategies and the processes of constructive controversy align? Illustrate how these can be leveraged to create positive social change.
· Describe your social change project or pick a millennial project from the Buschlen and Reusch (2016) article to analyze for this assignment. Highlight areas you think may lead to potential conflict where various parties or stakeholders may have different perspectives, different issues at stake, or be impacted in different ways.
· The Social Change Model of Leadership lists the seven Cs as important for understanding self (or mindfulness): consciousness, commitment and congruence; understanding groups: collaboration, controversy with civility, and common purpose; and understanding citizenship and change. As a leader in your social change project, describe yourself related to each of these dimensions. Or, if you chose a millennial project, describe their leadership on each of these dimensions. Illustrate how the 7 Cs interact with Hagemann and Stroope’s (2012) managerial tools to address conflict in your change project.
· For this change project, review the theory of constructive controversy from the Johnson and Johnson (2014) article, and illustrate how this process ensures that the political discourse is constructive.
