NOTE ABOUT YOUR GRADE: You will want to turn in your copy of the script with the names of the compositions and composers in a Hard Copy to me on the day that the assignment is due. Please be on time so I can place your grade in e campus grade center. When you are late on work, it is difficult for me to go back in and place your grade into the e campus grade center. I hope you understand. Please check all of the slots in e campus and be sure you have grades for all the work you did. I place grades into e campus myself. Thank you for your cooperation. You may also go to WEBCOM 2 and look at the assignment in the assign/test tab and then number the question and just answer it. This can be hand written. (NEATLY WRITTEN AND NO SCRATCH OUTS) You may use liquid paper or pencil and eraser. Be sure to be as neat as possible. Or just use WORD and then print out your work on a printer.
In Unit IV, you will listen to 25 musical pieces from the chronological list which is in historical order. This was done purposely according to the way music progressed throughout time from the Middle Ages to the present time. (This is explained in your textbook.) Make sure to read about each of the music pieces (compositions) in your textbook while you listen to the compositions through the Richland College library data base called, NAXOS. The pieces are explained in descriptions in the text for you as well as a description of the composition and what to listen for when the music is playing. You may use the text as a source. (JUST place in parenthesis TEXT after the information if it is from the text). Reading the textbook while listening to the musical pieces (examples) in the NAXOS MUSIC will help you. The text explains the musical elements: tempo, rhythm, texture, dynamics, melody, and timbre as used in each composition. It also describes in detail what you are listening to such as which instruments are played and if there are vocals, (singing) such as a choir. (or choir with accompaniment. Listen to all pieces several times so that you will remember them before you select which of the ten you will write about in your assignment.
After you spend time listening to all the musical examples, then write your script starting with number 10 which will be your first composition in your script. Your favorite work will be the last one which is number one (1). In your paragraph for each of the compositions, you will use words that are musical terminology and be sure to write about how music expresses the human experience and how music reflects cultural values. Be totally observant, specific and detailed in your comments in this script when describing each individual composition. Utilize the words such as melody, harmony, timbre, dynamics, texture, tempo and dynamics. These are the elements of Music found in Unit I. RUBRIC: to receive full credit, be sure to be thorough in explaining work and informing your audience about the composer.
This understanding of musicology and historical content will become easy if you read about the music and composer. It is all in the book and if you want to do more research, you may find the compositions on the internet and also find biographies of the composers. This is a great idea. Be sure to keep track of the names and addresses of websites, YOUTUBE, and other sources that you use in the assignment so you can place them in the References.
How to use NAXOS MUSIC LIBRARY WHERE THE MUSICAL LISTENING COMPOSITIONS ARE LOCATED:
Go to the WEBCOM 2 tab called MUSIC LISTENING and you will find that the directions for this data base will guide you. (You may also call the reference librarian and he will guide and help you.)
You are to distinguish between the musical time periods and listen for the elements of music in the compositions. The musical compositions and instructions on how to access the compositions are found in the MUSIC LIBRARY tab in WEBCOM 2. Your textbook explains what the composer may have experienced or what influenced them during their life. If you have problems figuring out the NAXOS MUSIC Library, you may call the librarian. Listening to the music on campus or in the library may load faster. IF YOU ARE Off campus and listening to the compositions in NAXOS MUSIC LIBRARY, you may ask for help from the reference librarian but on campus does not make it necessary for a password and email.
OFF CAMPUS IMPORTANT DIRECTIONS: Getting into the data base of the Richland Library is through the tab that I prepared for you. You may also choose to just go to their website by way of Richland College Library and click on data bases and go to N for NAXOS MUSIC and click on it. When off campus, in order to listen to the music and get into NAXOS, you must sign in by using a letter e before your student ID. Place the letter e plus your ID e student ID and then the password that is the same as your e connect password. Place the letter e in front of your student ID and use the e connect password to access the library listening called NAXOS MUSIC Library which is a data base in the Richland College Library site. The music plays on your computer. Wear headsets when you are around others in the library.
ASSIGNMENT INFORMATON:
Your assignment is to become a Disk Jockey (DJ) or called a radio host, on the radio. You will write a script that you will read to your make belief audience out in “radio land” for your radio show. You are to become a “make belief popular radio announcer.” Choose your ten top compositions that are from the 25 that are in NAXOS LIBRARY and discussed in your Unit Four. Select those that you found to be the most inspiring to discuss with your radio audience. Read about the compositions in the textbook and listen to the music in the NAXOS MUSIC Library which is a data base in Richland’s library. Describe to your audience what they are to listen for when they listen to music on your show. You should mention information such as the instruments that they will hear. For example, if the music is loud or soft, fast or slow or gets loud and then soft and if there are a lot of instruments playing or just one a few. Your job is also to share information about the composer in the script. You will state the name, the name of the work, the period the work is from, and details about the work. You will want to be interesting so add pertinent and interesting facts about the period and musical composition. Also include information about the musician’s life and why he or she wrote music. Tell listeners about that composer’s life and include what other works were written by that composer. Include musical terms such as dynamics, (loud or soft), tempo (fast or slow) and rhythm (type of beat), harmony (polyphonic, monophonic or homophonic), and melody in your script. This is helpful for your radio listeners since they may not know a lot about this type of music. Your script should be interesting and include information about the composer and a detailed explanation about the way it sounds. You may use your text which gives you this information. (This will help your grade by increasing your points.)
NOTE: FURTHER EXPLANATION IF NEEDED FOR SUCCESS: You are to pretend to be a Disk Jockey (radio host) at a radio station. The purpose of the assignment is for you to distinguish between the types of music from different time periods and hear the elements of music. You will describe compositions’ sounds to your radio audience. You may explain why one composition sounds differently from another. You may explain how you hear the comparisons between the sounds of the instruments of the Baroque Period and the Classical Period. The string instruments are what make a band different in its sound from an orchestra. The orchestra was formed into the four sections during the Classical Period (1750 – 1825). Classical Music is not just any music that is not popular. It is from that time period. Look at the book to see time periods. Hopefully, you will have a lot of fun with this assignment as a DJ. If you like cars, have a car dealership sponsor your radio show. If you like restaurants or food, you may use that to make up your commercial. What you write up is make believe. You will begin with your tenth selection (10) and go backwards. 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4,3,3 2, and your favorite composition is number 1 (one). ONLY if a composition has words is it called a song. USE WORD for this assignment. Begin your assignment below:
