Essay 2 Assignment Specification 2020-21 |
ASSIGNMENT 2 (50%) – Critical essay on physical activity and mental health (2000 words) – The purpose of this assignment is to encourage the student to address in-depth the relationship between physical activity and one aspect of mental health, and consider how this evidence base can be communicated to the general public. Due 12pm on 7th December
Drawing from current literature critically discuss if physical activity can:
a. Either enhance general mental health or self-esteem
Or prevent/decrease the incidence of depression or stress and anxiety (1500 words).
b. Create a resource/infographic to communicate to the general population (or a specialist group) the benefits of physical activity for mental health (equivalent to 500 words).
There is some flexibility to discuss the specific focus of essays within these general areas to reflect the interests of students. For example, students may focus on a specific populations (e.g., post-natal mothers), or a particular physical activity (e.g., walking). It is important to discuss your idea with Ailsa to confirm suitability.
There is also a degree of flexibility and creativity on the types of resources created – it may be an infographic, worksheet, video, or even animation. We will discuss this further in class.

FEEDBACK YOU WILL RECEIVE
In line with University guidance we aim to provide feedback within 15 working days of staff time. For this assignment we aim to provide feedback during the week beginning the 4th January in two ways:
· Cohort Feedback will be uploaded into Learn.
· Individual feedback will be provided though 1) in text annotations; 2) feedback on achievement of the marking criteria using the grid detailed below; 3) Four or five key points relating to what was done well, and what could be improved.

This section should creatively use the information covered in the synthesis of literature to create an applied evidence-based resource to effectively communicate and promote PA/SB to the general public. Resources should be clear, engaging and accurately reflect the evidence presented in previous section. For example for essay 2 – Create a resource that highlights the potential benefits of PA for mental health. This could be an infographic, video, animation – be creative! |

Standard feedback item about presentation and writing quality & the extent to which academic & scientific reporting conventions are followed. Specifically, the essay should be presented in a logical and literate manner, using at least 1.5 spacing and 11 point font.
