1 - Read the assignment
Spend the first week reading the requirements of the assignment.
First look for task words and highlight them. Examples of task words could be a combination of DISCUSS, EXPLAIN, DEMONSTRATE, ARGUE or ANALYSE.
Next, find the topic words or phrases tell you what topic you are expected to write about. Topic words are generally easy to identify, as they are likely to be the topics that you have studied in your subject.
Finally, search for focus words. These are the specific aspects of the topic you are asked to pay particular attention to as you write about the topic.
Below is an example
Schoolies week is an important rite of passage for Australian teenagers. Discuss.
Task word: Discuss
Topic words: Schoolies week
Focus words: Important, rite of passage, Australian teenagers
You should also spend the first week doing some background reading to help you understand the topic. This could be watching videos on YouTube, reading articles online, speaking your lecturer or discussing the assignment with your classmates. At this stage you don't need to read academic articles.
2 - Research
Start researching and reading articles. Expect this to take a lot of your time. Reading the abstract or summary of an article may help you decide if the article is worth reading further. As you read each article highlight and summarise ideas that may be useful.
A good shortcut is to use the highlighting and comment tool in Adobe Reader. Click on this link to watch a short video on how to use the highlight and comment tool on Adobe Reader.
3 – Plan
Begin planning your assignment. Start by writing down topics you will cover in each paragraph then brainstorm ideas around each topic. Link ideas with support from academic sources. Don't forget to note where each source came from
When you feel you have enough for the body of your assignment, you can then start to plan your introduction. Use the topic sentences in each paragraph to assist you to write the thesis statement and use the assignment question to help you write the introduction.
4 – Write a draft then final essay
The assignment is due on the last day of this week. You need to begin writing the first draft of your assignment. If you have a good plan and enough academic sources you should have no issues.
Start each paragraph with a transition signal such as, firstly or next. Ensure all ideas in each paragraph are connected with linking words such as, further or in addition. Begin with writing the body, conclusion then introduction.
Use this checklist to make sure you have done everything in your assignment and always refer to the rubric.
Ideally, you want to finish and submit your assignment to Turnitin one or two days before the assignment is due. The reason for this, is to give you a chance to make any necessary changes that Turnitin may have screened as being copied or plagiarised.
