The Assignment
Write a well-researched persuasive argument that highlights a public conversation or debate and answers a research question that engages readers. Your argument should 1) provide some background or context for the debate, 2) establish common ground with readers, 3) set forth the necessity of your argument, 4) treat both sides fairly, and 5) acknowledge critics and counterarguments.
Research and Language Skills
A successful persuasive argument will demonstrate the writer’s awareness of
· an engaging research conversation;
· credible source materials and credentials of sources;
· key terms;
· accurate MLA form, including how to integrate visuals or illustrations, how to integrate direct quotes with signal phrases, how to introduce, cite and comment on long quotations;
· how to synthesize sources.
