Subject: FedEx Ground Facility, Olive Branch, MS

Construction of Above-Ground Water tank

Dear Mr. Guru:

XYZ, Inc. is in the process of designing an above-ground circular water tank at the referenced facility in Olive Branch, Mississippi. The tank will be 30 feet in diameter and is expected to have a maximum water height of 30 feet. The tank will be founded on a 30-feet circular mat. The expected weight of the empty tank and foundation is 350,000 lb.

A geotechnical investigation was conducted at the site and it indicated the following:

Depth, ft.

Soil type

Average Unit Weight, pcf

Specific Gravity

0 - 10

Layer 1:Silty Sand (SM)

118

2.65

10-30

Layer 2: Lean Clay (CL)

119

2.69

30-60

Layer 3: Sand (SP)

123

2.66

The investigation indicated that the groundwater table is at a depth of 8 feet. XYZ will be sending one sample from Layer 1 and 2 samples from Layer 2.

In order to design the tank foundation, we are requesting the following tests:

· One-dimensional consolidation on a sample from the clay layer

· Direct shear test on the sandy sample

· Unconfined compression on the sample from the clay layer

Once the tests are performed, ASU, Inc. should provide the following:

· A plot of e versus log p from the consolidation test.

· Relevant consolidation parameters (Compression index, Swell index, Preconsolidation Pressure, OCR, plots of Time rate of consolidation and coefficient at different loading levels).

· The expected consolidation settlement of the clay layer under the tank after it is fully loaded.

· The expected time to reach a settlement of 0.50 inch after the tank is fully loaded.

· The undrained shear strength (cohesion) of the clayey layer.

· The angle of internal friction of the sandy layer.

If you need additional information, please contact us.

Sincerely,

John Doe
