Problem 1: For the example worked in class, investigate the effect of varying a FS (factor of safety) from 1 to 5 on the required diameter of the cable AB. Plot this result in Excel.

Problem 2: Design the bar CB for a FS of 1.5. What is the corresponding required cable diameter?

Problem 3: Draw shear and bending moment diagrams and calculate axial forces for each member of the frame shown below. Ignore self-weight.

Address the following:

• Beam EF vs. Beam FG vs. Beam GH – how do their Shear/Moment diagrams differ? Why?

• Explain the importance of Brace CH.

• Is the location of Brace CH important? Why or why not?
