research paper-College student substance abuse
This assignment addresses:
Recognize the physiological, social/cultural, and psychological influence on their well-being.
Recognize themselves as individuals undergoing a particular stage of human development, how their well being is affected by the university’s academic and social systems, and how they can facilitate their development within the university environment.
Guidelines
Overview. Current research suggests that, at least in developed nations, the period known as emerging adulthood is an important one for successful adaptation in adulthood. Thus, the goal of this paper is to examine human development during the period of emerging and/or young adulthood. That is, you will be exploring the issues commonly faced by 18- to 25-year-olds. (If you are older than age 25, you should write about your own stage of development – early, middle, or late adulthood). Be sure to pick a topic that is personally meaningful to you. You will be asked to examine peer-reviewed, scholarly research on development in this period in all four domains of human development:
[1] Cognitive (e.g., thinking, learning, understanding, gaining knowledge, perceiving;
ideas; beliefs; attitudes; identity formation; etc)
[2] Social (e.g., relationships with family, significant others, peers, classmates, professors, staff; interactions with others; group memberships and activities, cultural relationships, etc.)
[3] Emotional (e.g., self-esteem, pride, shame, sympathy, empathy, mental health, stress, anxiety, joy, happiness, anger, hopelessness, etc.)
[4] Physical (e.g., health (such as: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, STDs/HIV/AIDS), fitness, nutrition, physical activities, etc.)
In addition to reviewing the relevant research, you will also be asked to locate campus resources that will help your development in each domain (i.e., it will address, enhance, buffer, mediate, mitigate, or otherwise impact positively the issue you identified in your literature review in each developmental domain).
You will need 8 peer-reviewed scholarly research articles (2 per domain) and 8 campus resources (2 per domain). You are encouraged to use your textbook for background information in the introduction and/or conclusion. The paper should be prepared in correct APA format. The paper should be at least 1500 words (not counting title or references) and is worth 60 points.
The paper format :
[A] Introduction
You will start with an introduction that: (a) presents your general topic and the developmental stage you are focusing on, (b) presents background information about that stage of development (c) indicates why this is an important topic (not personal opinion, but driven by data/facts –reference one of your 8 articles and/or the textbook), and (d) provides a succinct, but comprehensive, overview of what the paper will do and cover
[B] Body
The main body of your paper will focus on presenting the research findings relevant to your topic in all four domains. You will need a section for physical/physiological, one for emotional, one for social, and one for cognitive – the order is up to you. Include a discussion of the campus resources relevant to each domain when you discuss the domain itself. Use sentences to help connect or bridge the information between 1 section and the next as well as between 1 paragraph and the next w/in a section.
Articles:
For each article, present the hypotheses (or goals) and subjects of the study, and the most important or relevant results of the study (do not repeat the literature review (presented at the start of the article – read it, but do not begin citing until you reach the description of the hypotheses/goals and the subjects). For example:
“Hogan, Smith, and Mathur, (2014) were interested in the role of a fantasy disposition and openness to experience in emerging adults’ engagement in creative hobbies. Their sample consisted of ethnically and economically diverse college undergraduates. Results supported the concept, noted earlier, that fantasy and creativity are strongly associated (reference). Specifically, their results indicated that …..”.
Do not present a list of articles (First, X found this. Next, Y found that. Third, and last, Z found this). Instead integrate the articles – group by common or similar findings about the domain. Thus, you may find yourself citing an article in several different places in that domain section.
Avoid direct quotes – summarize everything in your own words. If you must quote, you need a reference plus page number in text (e.g., Hogan et al, 2013, pg. 298) as well as a full reference at the end
Resources
Locate university resources that will help facilitate your on-going development as a student at SJSU. You will need to find two specific examples from each of the four domains of development. Please be sure to provide the following information for each resource: (a) name of the resource; (b) location; (c) purpose and function of the resource (1 sentence);; (d) why the resource is related to the domain (1-2 sentences); and (e); how and why this resource would help college student development in that specific domain (1-2 sentences for each resource).
[D] Conclusion
In your conclusion, briefly summarize the key research findings you reviewed. Demonstrate how the four domains interact to impact development and well-being at that stage of human development. Indicate how campus resources can be used to address the issues faced by college students in these four domains. Draw your own careful and well considered conclusions about your topic based on the evidence presented in the research articles you have cited in the body of the paper – and specifically focus on the implications of this topic for well-being at this stage of development and for intervention/prevention, and/or the transition into the next stage of development.
[E] References
Provide a separate page with references for each article and website cited in the text. Be sure to provide the full reference for the textbook (if you use it) as well.
