Carefully read the summary brief (grey box at top of briefing document). Get a ‘feel’ for the general theme of the assignment. Consider all your assignments as ‘Professional Reports’ – particularly if the focus of the report is an
Executive Board or Managing Director.
Word count The word count, indicated at the top of the document, is important – and you will need to show the number of words you have used in a box at the top of your assignment template. You should aim to meet the word count. In your HR careers, you will write several reports, which will inform management decision making – so being disciplined with your words is important!
Introduction Always include an introduction – two to three sentences outlining the focus of the report will suffice.
This will show the marker that you understand the requirements of the assignment brief and that you are going in the right direction.
Sub headings Use sub headings that reflect the specific assignment requirements. These should reflect the key themes indicated on your assignment template – these are what you need to do to meet the requirements of the assignments. Using sub headings will help you check that you have covered all of the detailed assignment requirements; it will help the marker see that you have done this as well!
Use your own words Whilst we encourage further independent reading and research around all the topics you are studying, do not be tempted to copy and paste useful text from the Internet. This is called plagiarism and will result in a FAIL. The marker needs to be certain that you have understood the underpinning theory and the learning that has taken place during your qualification. Should you decide to use brief quotations from a secondary resource you must clearly state where this information has come from – naming the publication and the author. Using other peoples words – whether this is an on line resource, text book or using a colleagues assignment to help you, tells us nothing of your own understanding of the important topics that are being written about.
Check your work Take time to check through your work. You are not assessed specifically on your use of English, but you should make sure that your assignments can be understood and interpreted correctly. It is often a good idea to have a trusted colleague read your assignments before you send them in to make sure they read well.
