1. Discussion Assignment (500 WORDS)

Define and describe the concept of Data Explosion

Discuss Thomas Davenport’s assertion that analytics are source of sustainable competitive advantage.  Provide examples from your research or experience of organization’s that have realized competitive advantage through analytics

2. Portfolio Activity (3-PAGE REFLECTIVE PAPER)

This unit has introduced to the topics of The Internet of Things (IoT) and Big Data and we began to look at how they are connected.  We live our daily lives perhaps somewhat oblivious to how we are a part of the IoT and how we contribute to the ever-growing warehouse of data that is collected every minute of every day.  Yet the increasing connectedness of things to each other and to the internet is becoming more prevalent and it is changing the way business is done -- from our personal business to how entire industries operate.   What we do know is that these things are affecting all industries and understanding how the data being collected is driving change is a key to staying relevant, viable and secure in the future.

For your Portfolio Activity:

· Consider your industry -- how does the IoT and Big Data currently play into your job, your organization and the industry?  Are these two things connected and if so, how?  If not, why?

· Critically reflect - how have the IoT and Big Data changed the way you do business?  How has it changed the way your organization does business?

· Look ahead & evaluate -- how are IoT and Bid Data poised to change your job? Your Organization? Your Industry?  Is your organization ready? What possible pitfalls do see?  Does your organization have any limitations in this area?  How might those limitations be ameliorated?

Address the above questions, as well as other areas that are relevant in a 3-page reflective paper.  While you may need to do some research, this is not a research paper.  You are being asked to look at the reality of the Big Data and our increasing connectedness and critically reflect.   Be sure to cite any sources you use.

BUS 5117 STRATEGIC DECISION MAKING AND MANAGEMENT

Reading Assignment

The text for this course, Strategic Management: Evaluation and Execution, provides the foundation for many of the concepts in the course. It will be supplemented with a case study from MIT this week.

3. DISCUSSION ASSIGNMENT (500 WORDS)

In this question, you will consider two theoretical views of an organization’s internal environment. First, explain the resource-based theory and its relevance to strategic management. Then, select one of the other theories (enactment, environmental determinism, institutional theory, or transaction cost economics) and compare and contrast it to the resource-based view. Which do you think best explains the internal environment? Why?

4. Written Assignment (4-PAGE CASE ANALYSIS)

After reading the case “Restoration Affiliates,” reflect on the challenges of the organization. Build a value chain of the organization’s activities and identify the strongest and weakest link. Then, based on the information in the case, perform a SWOT analysis. Make sure that there are at least three strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats each. Finally, based on your analysis of the value chain and SWOT, explain what is the most important strategic challenge or opportunity facing the firm and how it could be implemented.

Read the General Guidelines for Case Studies and the Case Study Rubric before beginning this paper.

Submit at least a 4-page case analysis, (independent of the title page and reference page) double-spaced in Times New Roman (or its equivalent) font which is no greater than 12 points in size. Paper and all citations should be in APA format.

5. Portfolio Activity (500 WORDS)

This week we learned about the SWOT analysis. Reflect on how you might do a SWOT on your own abilities. For example, what internal personal strengths and weaknesses do you have? What external opportunities and threats are there for you?  For each strength, weakness, opportunity, and threat, can you find one which you discovered through your coursework thus far? After viewing the completed SWOT, what conclusions can you draw about your professional goals? Are they in alignment with the SWOT?
