Directions: Please make sure all your work is done in your own words. Cut and pasted answers directly from the lessons will not be accepted. If things are not in your own words you will not get credit. Also, if you want full credit on an answer, have your answers be detailed and in depth. 1. Processing the ELA Shifts

Read “Common Core Shifts for English Language Arts/Literacy.” For each of the ELA/Literacy shifts listed below, answer the following:

1. What is this shift, and why is this shift needed? 2. What opportunities does this shift present? 3. What challenges does this shift present?

1. Regular practice with complex text and academic language 2. Reading, writing, and speaking grounded in evidence from text, both

literary and informational 3. Building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction

2. Name the Standards

Closely read the ELA and literacy anchor standards on pages 10, 18, 22, and 25 of English Language Arts and Literacy Standards. Describe the anchor standards for each of the following using a phrase of 1 to 5 words.

1. Reading anchor standards (There are 10 in all.) 2. Writing anchor standards (There are 10 in all.) 3. Speaking and listening standards (There are six in all.) 4. Language anchor standards (There are six in all.)
