CIS 6208 IT Project Management

Exercise Name Activity-based Budgeting Purpose Activity-based budgeting is an industry standard approach toward project budgeting. Use of Microsoft Project in developing an activity-based budget is also an industry standard. Developing skills in activity-based costing and Microsoft Project will help to develop real world knowledge and experience that can be leveraged by all project managers regardless of industry or project type. Description Students will create an activity-based project plan and budget based on the information provided in the project exercise Work Breakdown Structure (WBS). This is a continuation of the PERT Estimation & Project Plan Creation exercise. Students will update a MS Project plan based on the activity cost and resource data. Students will submit the following in support of this assignment.

Microsoft Project – Updated Plan Incorporate and submit your updated MS project plan with the updated cost and resource data. Each resource must be entered with the correct cost data (hourly or flat fee). Each task or activity must be updated to reflect the assigned resources and effort (resource hours).

Entering Resources 1. Go to Resource Sheet 2. Enter three (3) resources – Bill, Susan, and Pat 3. For each resource, enter group = 1, Std. Rate = $50, Ovt. Rate = $50

Entering Resource Cost Estimates 1. Go to Gantt Chart View 2. On each task, right click and select “Assign Resources” 3. For each resource (Bill, Pat, Susan) click “Assign” button 4. Enter hours in units column as *h (e.g. 40h to represent 40 hours). Entering Fixed Cost Estimates 1. Go to Cost Table (right click the Select All” button - top upper left cell). 2. Enter fixed costs (Hardware and Software) related to appropriate tasks.

Microsoft Project - Reports Create the following reports in MS Excel (visual reports) format and submit with your updated MS Project plan.

Reports Interpretation Students will write an interpretation (MS Word Format) of the data provided in the following MS Project reports.

In addition, submit answers to the following questions (MS Word Format).

- What is the total project cost? - Which tasks have over allocated resources? - Which resources are over allocated?
