Assignment 8
The goal of assignment 8 is for you to explore the USDA Census of Agriculture and the FAOSTAT, practice creating nicely formatted tables and figures, and experience the challenges trying to match data you seek versus what is available.
Instructions for Assignment 8:
Part 1:
2. The item you select should include “farms” and “$1000.” Note that the farms tells how many farms were producing this commodity in your state, and $1000 tells the total sales in thousands of dollars.
3. Collect this data for your state and the US for the following years: 1997, 2002, 2007, and 2012, 2017. Note that the level of aggregation or the data itself may be different (or disappear) the further back in time you go, so do your best to match up your variables.
4. Using good table formatting rules (include source information) create a table of your data and include the following columns of information: Year, Farms, and Sales ($1000). Next, your title should identify the state and specific commodity you selected, and very briefly describe the data. Do not forget to include the source of your data—as I described in table formatting.

6. In 5-7 sentences, describe your data, its potential relevance to your firm (even if this is fairly loose), and the trend you observe—make sure you compare it to the US levels (e.g., what proportion does it make up, etc.).
1. Go to the FAOSTAT page (demo from block) and identify production data for the country you selected that matches (as closely as you can) the commodity data you selected from the USDA Census of Agriculture. Note: if your country is the US uses FAOSTAT data and NOT the USDA data you already collected as the FAOSTAT data is on production and the USDA is on farms and sales.
2. Download data for the most recent 20-year period available (e.g, 1994-2013).
3. Create your own figure using this data and good figure formatting—DO NOT simply copy the figure you found on FAOSTAT (or you will not get credit for this exercise). For example your figure should look similar to the following:
Figure 1. Apple production (tons) in Afghanistan, 1994-2013

4. In 5-7 sentences, describe your data, its potential relevance to your firm (even if this is fairly loose), and the trend you observe. Also describe how this trend compares to that in the USDA data (even if your country is the US).
In a word document, copy and paste your table on page one and include below it your 5-7 sentence discussion. On page two, copy and paste your figure and include below it and your 5-7 sentence discussion. Make sure your formatting is correct! Upload this Word document to the Assignment 8 assignment file.
