Psychology is a distinct and mixed subject made up of many different studies and practices. In the United States, there are fourteen recognized specialties in professional psychology. There are six specilties acknowledged by the American Psychological Association (APA). Two Specialties within psychology that treat mental emotional and behavioral disorders are called clinical psychology and counseling psychology (Corbin et al,. 2013).

Clinical Psychology concerned with the assessment and treatment of mental illnesses and

disabilities. It is heavily drawn from the mental health movement that emphasized psychological dysfunction, disability, and Rehabilitation. Clinical psychology constitutes the largest psychology specialties field. Clinical psychologists usually work in counseling centers, independent or group practices, hospitals, or clinics (Neimeyer et al,. 2011).

Counseling psychology is a specialty within Professional Psychology that focuses on facilitating personal and interpersonal functioning across the lifespan. This profession centers around emotional, social, vocational, educational health related Development, and organizational concern. There are three broad professions to counseling. These three are called psychodynamic, humanistic and behavioural (Neimeyer et al,. 2011).

Both clinical and counseling psychology have potential theoretical differences. Research on the distinctiveness of the two Specialties has also noted increasing distinctions in relation to their underlying training models. Both have positioned themselves beneath the scientist practitioner training model. With its distinctive emphasis on the integration of Science and practice the boulder model dominated the field professional of training within both Specialties until the introduction of the scholar practitioner model (Neimeyer et al,. 2011).

I chose this article and subject because my profession is a branch of clinical psychology. I am currently a mental health specialist and I work with people on emotional social and Vocational. There has always been a curiosity within me concerning the human mind and Behavior, so that including the fact I loved helping others formed into an interest in mental health and processes.
