Assignment 6: How We Think About Charities

This assignment will help students make a connection between the "business" of charities.

Please watch the video that follows and then answer the questions.  Please be thorough and concrete.  This is not a memo or letter, so no headings or background information are needed. But, the answers must follow the 7Cs, and questions must be repeated exactly before answering the questions:  Again, each answer must be clear, thorough and insightful and with no spelling or grammatical errors for full credit.

Watch this video and answer these questions:

http://www.ted.com/talks/dan_pallotta_the_way_we_think_about_charity_is_dead_wrong?language=en (Links to an external site.)

1. What are the two key points of the video? Explain each on about 20 words

2. Do you agree or disagree with the speaker? Why? Explain in about 20 words

3. Go to the website Charity Navigator:  https://www.charitynavigator.org/  (Links to an external site.) and find a charity  (1) that has a cause that you support and (2) that has a very high Program Expense Percentage  (this is defined on the website). Name and describe the charity (in about two lines) and why you think it is worthy of support, both in terms of its cause and its Program Expense percentage.  In other words, you are making a moral and a business case for supporting that charity (see format below)

4. On the same website, identify a charity that seems to be questionably ethical because of the high salaries and fees it pays, but with a low percentage of the charity's total expenses  that are spent on the programs and services it delivers (see format below)

5. What did you learn from the video that surprised you? Did it change your thinking towards charities?
