KINS 250 ASSIGNMENT SHOULDER GIRDLE MOVEMENT ANALYSIS

Shoulder girdle exercise movement analysis

DIRECTIONS: For each phase of movement identify the shoulder girdle movement occurring and the respective shoulder girdle muscles primarily responsible for causing/controlling those movements. Beside each muscle indicate the type of contraction: Isometric, Concentric or Eccentric

EXAMPLE:

Barbell shrugs

Pull-up phase (elevation)

Rhomboid, levator scapulae, trapezius upper and middle

Concentric

Return to starting position (depression)

Rhomboid, levator scapulae, trapezius upper and middle

Eccentric

30 points TOTALS: (2 points per box; 1 point for identifying at least one agonist and 1 point for identifying the correct type of contraction/muscle action concentric, eccentric or isometric)

Exercise

Initial movement phase

Secondary movement phase

Movement(s)

Agonist(s) – (contraction type)

Movement(s)

Agonist(s) – (contraction type)

Push-up

Pushing phase to up position

Lowering phase to starting position

Chin-up

Pulling up phase (adduction, depression, & downward rotation)

Return phase (abduction, elevation, & upward rotation)

Bench press

Lifting phase to upward position (abduction)

Lowering phase to starting position (adduction)

Dip

Pushing up phase (downward rotation & depression)

Lowering phase (upward rotation & elevation)

Lat Pull

Pull-down phase to below the chin position (adduction, depression, & downward rotation)

Return phase to starting position (abduction, elevation, & upward rotation)

Overhead press

Lifting phase to upward position (upward rotation & elevation)

Lowering phase to starting position (downward rotation & depression)

1. Identify the bones that make up the shoulder girdle.

2. Given the scapula is shaped somewhat like a triangle

a. What landmark is commonly used to determine the direction the scapula is rotating

b. What direction is the landmark moving if the scapula is rotating upward?

3. Which shoulder girdle motion are most linear?

4. Which shoulder girdle motions are most angular?

5. Describe scapulohumeral rhythm? The movement relationship between the shoulder girdle and the shoulder joint and how is shoulder joint motion affected in the absence of scapulohumeral rhythm?
