You will work in a group of 3 to 4 students maximum to prepare a presentation on the

following two subjects:

1- New Business Opportunities within firms during the lockdown

2- Encouragement of Governments for Healthy Competition between

companies.

1- New Business Opportunities during the lockdown

As a result of the global COVID-19 pandemic, many countries around the world were

forced to have a total lockdown in order to contain the spread of COVID-19.

This total Lockdown caused a big impact on businesses all over the world and had

serious consequences, economically or legally. In such a situation, businesses were

facing double pressures. On the one hand, they needed to recoup the losses of a long

shutdown and on the other, they needed to carefully manage staff during the ongoing

outbreak.

When most of us heard about concerned companies shutting down or laying off workers

because of suspension of their business, some other companies were uniquely suited to

the COVID- 19 crises and have seen an uptick demand by their innovation thinking

and approach.

Here is an example of one opportunity: When restaurants were not allowed to open

their doors to the public, some restaurants were shifted to delivery mode to their

customer’s doorstep. Companies started to produce boxes of food for delivery including

some organic ready meals and essential pantry items. After around 30 years of running

restaurants, some companies had to turn the business into an e-commerce site within 30

hours.

You are requested to search for the implications of COVID-19 on businesses and

select a company (to talk about during your presentation) that had to find new

ways of working and exploiting the opportunities, not only to sustain their

business and remain in the market but also to boost their profits during the crises.

2- Healthy Competition between Companies

As you learned from chapter 5, that a company that might be a Leader in the first

generation of a technology can become a Follower in the next generation. This is

referred to as Healthy Competition where many governments try to encourage and

propagate this phenomena.

You are requested to present an example of healthy competition between two

companies for a certain business. Also in your presentation, show how Healthy

Competition can motivate the invention of new and better products or more efficient

processes where consumers can benefit from this Innovation. Additionally, many other

benefits that can be achieved with Healthy Competition such as the supports and

contributions that drive economic growth, increased standards of living, awareness and

market penetration, higher quality of products with fair prices, etc.

As mentioned in the class, one of the example for healthy competition: When BMW

celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2016, Mercedes-Benz surprisingly congratulated

BMW via friendly advertisement along with an invitation to their museum and the

subsequent response and positive action by BMW.

You need to incorporate the lessons you have learned during the course, such as

Knowledge Management, Innovation Strategy Development, New Products

Development…etc. Below is a guideline to what your presentation may include as

applicable:

1. Provide an overview of major businesses of the selected companies. (10 marks,

5 for each topic)

2. The annual profits of the selected companies for both topics. (6 marks, 3 for each

topic)

3. For topic 1, the effect of the lockdown on the economics of the company and the

economics after implementing the new opportunities. (3 marks)

4. For topic 2, the economics for both companies and the effect of the healthy

competition on both companies. (3 marks)

(8 marks will be for the presenting the topics and for team work among the group)
