below. The columns are 18 feet high and weigh 76 pounds per foot. How many pounds of
steel need to be purchased for the roof? Prepare a table with various steel types and their

Q2: Determine the purchase quantity of 2 × 6 rafters needed for the roof and how many
pieces of ridge shingles are needed for the roof in figure below? The slope of the roof is 4:12
and the exposure is 5 inches wide.

Q3: Determine the purchase quantity and number of board feet of 2 × 12 joist needed for the
floor in the figure below. The joists are spaced 16 inches on center. Be sure to include the

1. Use figure 13.8 and steps provided below that figure to estimate the # of spaces and
quantity of joists respectively.
2. Use the formula 13-1 in chapter 13: Wood for converting the joist quantity as
number of board feet.
