The number of older people in the workforce is rising. According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, the percentage of the population over the age of 55 active in the workforce will increase, while the percentage of 16- to 24-year olds will drop. Current workforce levels are around 65% of those aged 55-64 and 27% of those aged 65-74. Projections for these age groups in 2022 are 68% and 32%. (In 1992, the numbers were 55% and 15% respectively.)
Read the “Best Practices” section in your textbook on pages 342-343.
a) Discuss management strategies for attracting and keeping your best senior employees. (14 points)
b) As a boss, how would you manage “Ageism” in the workplace? (14 points)
c) Write about an older person that you know who is still in the workforce, and describe what you think that she/he has to offer her/his employer as well as her/his colleagues that a younger worker might not be able to offer. (7 points)
