HUSV301 Assignment Four: Integrated Care

This assignment is intended to give you some real-life experience in exploring resources for the

prevention and treatment of opioid dependency and co-occurring disorders. The resources are designed

to give exposure to the barriers involved in the recovery process from addiction. You will then have the

opportunity to design an integrated model of care based on the information you gain.

Keep in mind the three models that are reviewed in the textbook and how they interact on behalf of

individuals, families, and communities:

• Medical Model

• Public Health Model

• Human Services Model

Review all the resources provided in D2L

Read, study, and review the article on an integrated model of care (also in D2L):

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7286889/

Read the assignment instructions below. Be prepared to research the resources for opioid recovery in a

city or region that will be randomly assigned by the instructor. This assignment will require online

research and likely some out-of-state phone calls. If this becomes a concern, contact the instructor.

Part I Instructions:

Use the Opioid Resource Tracking Form (provided in D2L) and complete the form by identifying

resources for your assignment community in the following areas:

c. Alcohol

d. How many mental health beds in hospitals? Jail?

3) Medical Assisted Treatment (MAT)

a. Suboxone

b. Methadone

4) Peer Support

a. 12-step (Narcotics Anonymous, Heroin Anonymous, Alcoholics Anonymous, other)

b. SMART Recovery

c. Celebrate Recovery

5) Harm Reduction

a. Naloxone

b. Needle exchange

c. Fentanyl test strips

d. Other

6) Services for the special population of your choice:

a. Teenagers

b. Pregnant females

Part II Instructions:

Write a one-page essay

1. Compare and contrast the public health model, medical model, and human services models.

2. Describe how you can imagine the role of a human services professional assisting clients,

family members, and the community, in your assigned community, to address the opioid

epidemic from an integrative perspective.

Part III: Final Assignment – not due until last Sunday evening before the last week in semester

This assignment is intended to inspire you into civic responsibility. The course content has been difficult

at times and advocacy is the resilient response. “We the people” are the government, not “them”…

“Tolerance and apathy are the last virtues of a dying society.” ~ Aristotle

Develop a 500-800 word draft, advocating for policy or reform related to an area of social justice you

are passionate about. Topic examples can include, but are not limited to:

• Mass incarceration: people of color and/or people with mental illness

• Community prevention programs for youth

• Equal access for physical and mental healthcare

• Climate initiatives (e.g., water conservation, public transportation, solar for government offices)

• Resources for people struggling with addiction

• Housing for marginalized homeless populations

• Access to technology for indigenous populations

• Development of mental health first responder services (contributing to police reform)

The Draft is not intended to be sent, simply developed, and can be in any of the following formats:

• Letter/email to state representative

• OpEd

• Social media post that engages public support
