You are to create your own spreadsheet using the suggested data items below and supply values for each that you can supply from personal experience or “made-up values” ( be reasonable) to see if you can afford to buy a car you are hoping to buy. You will assume that you do not have a car at this time, and that it is necessary for you to purchase one.

Data needed:

Take home pay from job or other sources:

Rent:

Utilities:

Phone:

Groceries:

Credit Card Debt

Entertainment

Other expenses (cleaning, gas, parking etc.)

Other Income

(money from parents,

Extra job, etc.)

On spreadsheet:

1. Separate income from expenses.

2. Calculate total income and total expenses.

3. Create a chart on a separate sheet to show your expense and your income. Format with titles.

Next:

4. Go to a used car sales website and choose 2 cars you like in the $5000 to $10,000 range.

Then back on spreadsheet:

5. Below your income/expense data on the first sheet, list each car with the total payment for each, then use the PMT function to determine the monthly note at 6.5% interest for 6 years. Be sure you put the minus (-) sign in where you are asked for the amount. (Lesson 2)

6. On a row beneath the payment data, write your choice of which car you should buy, or your alternative solution.

7. Format the spreadsheet to make it attractive and easy to read.
