PERSUASION

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this assignment is twofold. First, I want you to engage in course material. Second, I’d like you to consider how course topics relate to you as a person.

LEARNING GOALS: While brief, this assignment aligns with the course’s learning goals. Specifically, this as- signment provides you with factual knowledge and methods of consumer behavior. The assignment also al- lows you to apply course material to improve critical thinking and problem solving.

The expectation of this assignment is to connect real world examples to what we discuss in class and to add to your consumer behavior toolbox of psychological principals that can and have influenced consumer be- havior.

The supplemental text assigned for this course, Influence: Science & Practice, provides descriptions of and research findings on six widely used interpersonal persuasive approaches. We will only be reading a short portion of the book and a summary of the six weapons (both written by the author), but I encourage you to read the entire book. Many students have told me that this was one of the most, if not THE most, valuable reading they had done during their college career.

PLEASE NOTE: AN AUTOMATIC “0” WILL BE GIVEN FOR ANY OF THE FOLLOWING ISSUES

1. Any assignment that utilizes examples discussed in class

2. Any assignment that does not address each question for each article

3. Any assignment that does not include a correctly formatted citation

4. Any assignment that states factual information but does not cite the source of the information

5. Any assignment that plagiarizes material from outside sources OR includes a direct quote from an outside source. Your job is to paraphrase and cite outside sources

THE FOLLOWING IS NECESSARY FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT

Write a brief report; you can organize your report around your responses to the following questions for each weapon of influence. This means that you will need to answer each of the following questions (questions A - D) for each of the 6 principles Cialdini discusses. This means your paper should be formatted as follows:

Principle #1: Answers A, B, C, and D

Principle #2: Answers A, B, C, and D

Etc., etc.

THE FOLLOWING IS NECESSARY FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT

a) Summarize: Provide a summary of the principle using your own words

b) Example: Provide an example from your own life of the principle that Cialdini discusses.

The example may describe a time that you used a technique, a time that someone else used it on

you, or a time you observed it being used

c) Application consideration: Identify and explain how a specific local organization could apply each tech- nique, internally and/or externally. The organization should be local but should not be a local chain. For ex- ample, it is fine to utilize Johnny Noodle King (local organization) but do not use a local McDonalds (a chain organization)

d) Consider the ethical issues that should be taken into consideration when anyone is thinking about

applying the principle

Additional Assignment Information

(a) The assignment should be written in question and answer form - it should include headings or the ques-

tions above as section heading

(b) You will need to discuss each principle separately, meaning that you will need to answer ALL questions

for each principle before moving on to discuss the next article

(c) Your response should be thorough but brief and close to 5 single-spaced pages (do not exceed 6 single-

spaced pages)

(d) Point Value: 110 points
