Assignment #3: Questions on Oates’s “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?”

1) What hints does Oates give us that Arnold Friend is not what he seems? Do you find him funny –

or frightening? Why?

3) Oates has described Connie’s choice at the end as a selfless, almost heroic, choice. Do you agree with this view? How do you interpret her actions at the end of the story?
