People who are suffering from generalized anxiety disorder portray different symptoms
as a result of the disorder. Difficulty in concentrating and sleeping are among the common
symptoms of the disorder. Individuals cannot sleep or concentrate well in whatever they are
doing. The majority cannot recall whatever was said in a particular conversation.
At night or any sleeping time, they find it difficult to sleep because they will keep on
thinking and worrying about different issues hence not in a position to sleep. Fatigue ad
irritability is also some of the symptoms of GAD. Patients get irritated easily since they may
view a person to be nagging, yet they mind about their condition. Sweaty palms and shaking are
also symptoms associated with GAD.

Mannes, Z. L., Dunne, E. M., Ferguson, E. G., Cook, R. L., & Ennis, N. (2020). Symptoms
of generalized anxiety disorder as a risk factor for substance use among adults
living with HIV. AIDS care, 1-10.
According to Ennis 2020, patients suffering from other forms of illnesses like HIV may
be the most affected by the disorder since the majority of their time will be spent on thinking and
worrying about their situation. They are forced to turn into the use of drug and substance abuse
to comfort themselves in the situation which they are facing. Challenges and life difficulty have
been sited to be the primary cause of GAD. The book continues by giving some of the measures
that should be taken while handling such a group since their conditions are critical.
It is essential to know such kind of people who may be having such situations since any
form of help in the right direction will be of great assistance to their process or recovery.

There are various causes which have been cited to be the causal factors of the disease.
One of the causes is the history of anxiety in a family. There are families with a history of
anxiety, and this should be a learning lesson to a family and the society to handle and cater for
members of that particular family to avoid them getting into GAD.
Child abuse and prolonged exposure to stressful situations can also lead to GAD. It is
vital for such knowledge since one may notice a person who has been through prolonged
stressful situations, and hence he or she is prone to GAD.

Diagnosis
DeMartini, J., Patel, G., & Fancher, T. L. (2019). Generalized anxiety disorder. Annals of
internal medicine, 170(7), ITC49-ITC64.
Mental health screening is one of the diagnosis from primary performance care, where
one is asked questions which tells more about the situation or conditions that one has been
experiencing and predict what the disease or disorders that one may be suffering. Those are the
initial stages of diagnosis performed by either a psychologist or a psychiatrist.
Treatment
Robichaud, M., Koerner, N., & Dugas, M. J. (2019). Cognitive-behavioural treatment for a
generalized anxiety disorder: From science to practice. Routledge.
Cognitive-behavioural therapy is one of the treatment measures prescribed for GAD
patients. It involves regular talks with a mental health professional. The stressing factor may
have caused damage in one's minds, and hence, through continuous talk with a mental health
professional will help heal and repair the damage. Other treatment methods may be used, but the
cognitive behavioural therapy has been considered to be one of the best.
Medication
Markota, M., & Morgan, R. J. (2017). Treatment of generalized anxiety disorder with
gabapentin. Case reports in psychiatry, 2017.
In most cases, the drugs prescribed by doctors would create a long-term plan and a short-
term plan at the same time. The short-term drugs are used to regulate and relax some of the
physical challenges or anxiety, such as muscle tension. Cognitive behavioural therapy can be
used as one of the treatment methods of GAD for a long-term plan. After the administration of

short-term treatment plan, there needs to be a long-term treatment plan. Continuous talks with a
mental health professional would serve the purpose of the long-term treatment plan.
