Introduction & Thesis

Begin your first paragraph here. The paper will be double-spaced throughout, including the references page. Be sure to indent each new paragraph.

It is important to remember that this is a comparison/contrast essay, and that each question has three parts (A, B, and C) you will need to answer. Begin your first paragraph by introducing your topic and stating your thesis or argument. Make clear the cultures and time periods you are covering, and what you will be comparing and contrasting.

You can use this template both to organize your ideas and to make sure your paper looks like all other APA format papers. Your paper must include a list of references – a list of those items you used in researching your paper. And your paper must mention the items on your list of references in what are called in-text citations, using the author’s last name and the year of publication inside parentheses, like this (Sayre, 2015). The red is only to get your attention; make it normal color. :) It’s that easy: make it look like APA format papers, list your references, and show how you use your referenced material.

A) Main points of Comparison/Contrast

The first part of each question asks you to compare and contrast two people or objects, such as Gilgamesh and Odysseus, or Greek and Indian sculpture. You cannot cover everything. I suggest choosing perhaps three points for comparison. Explain how they are alike or different in each area you choose.

-comparison/contrast 1

-comparison/contrast 2

-comparison/contrast 3

B) Comparison/Contrast between the two Cultures

Depending on your topic, you are then asked to in some way compare and contrast the two cultures that are involved in your paper. For instance, if you are comparing Greek and Indian sculpture, what do your findings tell us about ancient Greece and India? If you have a ruler of Byzantium and one from Egypt, what have you learned about relevant similarities and differences between their cultures?

C) Modern Application

Each topic then has some sort of modern application you need to think about. For example, your topic might ask about how Confucius’ teachings can apply in the modern workplace, or whether women in power now can learn from ancient queens (or not).

Conclusions

Finally, conclude your paper with a nice summary paragraph of 3-5 sentences that gives an overarching perspective on what you have presented and learned. Make sure it matches your introduction.

References

APA references look like this list below: no first names of authors (only use initials); no ALL CAPS titles; italicized book and article titles; year/date published (in parenthesis). Alphabetize your list by author’s last name. And if a source is .com or doesn’t have an author, think twice about whether you want to use it! Three quality sources are the minimum (more can earn extra points). Follow this example:

American Psychological Association. (2010). Publication manual of the American Psychological Association. Washington, DC: American Psychological Association.
