Viruses, spyware, adware & pop-ups

On a daily basis we see systems that are infected with viruses, trojans and spyware - there have never been so many malicious pieces of software around!

If you have a correctly configured system which receives regular updates and security patches then you're better protected from these common threats. We can help to stop these threats as well as offering you some safer surfing tips.

Troublesome software

In the majority of cases a computer problem turns out to be software related. These problems are often caused when unfriendly software is installed then removed. They can also be caused by incompatible drivers or software.

Due to the complexity of operating systems, the companies who develop them release regular updates to fix errors and potential security vulnerabilities in the original software. It's important to be using a correctly confugured device that receives regular updates.

Troublesome hardware

Some components wear out with use over time and simply need to be replaced. Any peripheral devices such as printers and scanners can fail to work correctly for many reasons.

We use industy approved techniques to diagnose, troubleshoot and remedy problems. If a part needs to be replaced, we'll advise on what we believe to be the most suitable options. In most cases we can fix or source and install an alternative component.

Improved performance & reliability

Technology is advancing at an alarming rate, and it's possible that the top of the range PC purchased 1 year ago is struggling to do what you want it to.

The good news is, you don't have to buy a new one to benefit from the latest technology. It's often a simple case of upgrading some of the internal components.

We offer a full upgrade service to best suite your needs and pocket.

Module: www102 Assigned: Friday October 9, 2020

Assignment Number: 2 Date Due: Monday October 19, 2020

Title: Making Mobile First Time Due: 9:00am

Instructor: John Framingham Value: 50% of final mark for www102

Brief

One of your latest clients - a Calgary-based computer services provider - has asked you to build them a single page mobile-first website.

They have provided you with a starter file that contains: all of the textual content for their site, a logo and a small selection of high-resolution images and icons. You should review their requirements, design and develop an appropriate mobile-first website for their business.

Requirements and Grading Breakdown

The look and feel of the page is up to you, but it must adhere to the following requirements:

1. Establish a CSS foundation (6%): Demonstrate that you understand how to use either a reset or Normalize and perform housekeeping. Establish a scale for your type and use it consistently. Choose an appropriate web font (or fonts) and use throughout your page.

2. Use all of the images provided (8%): Choose and use one of the provided logos in your header or navigation. Choose and use one of the photos as a banner image that fills the viewport’s width and takes up no more than 40% of its height. The remaining photos and graphics should be used appropriately throughout your page.

3. Design a navigation that adapts (12%): Demonstrate that you understand the differing requirements of browsing your page on a cell phone, a tablet and a larger device such as a laptop. Use media queries to change your navigation as the viewport width increases and decreases.

4. Create a layout that works well for all experiences (16%): Consider the differing requirements of browsing on a cell phone, a tablet and a larger device such as a laptop. Use media queries to change your layout as the viewport grows from small to large. Use the display property to show content that’s appropriate for each experience.

5. Use relative units of measurement (4%): Use ems and rems throughout your CSS, and the viewport units of measurement as appropriate. Use pixel-based values only as necessary to fix browser compatibility or rendering issues.

6. Demonstrate a clean and consistent coding style (4%): Use comments and consistent indentation in your HTML and CSS. Your code should be easy for me to read.

5 Tips for Success

1. Read this sheet a couple of times and ask for help if you’re not sure about something. 2. Thoroughly review the client’s content and requirements before you start to code. 3. When you have a design direction, start coding in your favourite text editor. 4. Develop with accessibility in mind - your finished site should be accessible to all. 5. Please don’t use a pre-built responsive library such as Bootstrap or Foundation.

Submission Instructions

Using FTP, upload your completed assignment files to the appropriate folder on your matrix server space (matrix.senecacollege.ca/~your-user-id), and create a link to it from your student page.

If you have not submitted your assignment by the due date and time it will be considered incomplete, unless you have submitted a late request and received approval for an extension.

Code Validation

Your file should contain only valid HTML and CSS code, as determined by the W3C validator. If you use invalid code, you must include a comment beside it explaining your decision. You will lose 2% for each uncommented validation error.

Late Policy All late assignments will be given a grade of zero. For a full discussion please refer to the Late Policy at http://webmaster.senecacollege.ca/class/docs/webmaster-late-assignment-policy.pdf

Plagiarism There are serious penalties for cheating and plagiarism offences and you are expected to be aware of our Academic Honesty Policy. For more information please refer to the Academic Policy at http://www.senecacollege.ca/ academic- policy/acpol-09.html
