Running head: QUALITATIVE STUDY: FATIGUE IN NURSING 1
QUALITATIVE STUDY: FATIGUE IN NURSING 7
Qualitative Study: Fatigue in Nursing
Background of Study
Fatigue Reduction in Nurses
The crucial problem identified by the study is the resultant inadequacy of staffing and working long shifts leading to poor quality of critical nursing services. This touches on the quality of professionalism and the level of dedication in nursing with min observation on both the ethics and the limitations that the dedication gives. In understanding this, two articles touch in the basic elements of both the consequences of long working hours to the quality of delivery of services and the ethics, values, and quality of life in both the professional and the service that is given. In consideration of this, Caruso et. al (2017) touches on the irregularity of the long hours working is one of the most concrete aspects that has been recognized as the definitive challenge in nursing and hence a great effect on the disruption of personal health through sleep deficiency creating an issue with human psychology. By this account, the significance of the study has been established through the confirmation of the fact that with disruption of sleep, there is a discordant pattern and rhythmic in the circadian and for this reason justification to claim on the health and safety of the nurse.
Consequently, the purpose of the study is to bring to attention the sensitivity of the overworking issue in the nurses and in that way a sense of health equity necessary in the implementation of improved healthcare services as well as the determination of proper policies that would support the professional and enhance the nursing practice. This is a question of development of the influence, design and the professional position which defines the scope of the study with critical analysis of the risks of long hours working in relation to the errors that are noticed in the delivery of care for the patients (Caruso et. al, 2017). In this way, the paper focuses on pointing out that there needs to be change and facilitation of proper sleeping patterns in nursing to minimize the safety issue within service delivery and in that way increase in efficiency of nursing. These issues become the questions that are answered within the study and an attempt to raise the issue that should be recommended to change the patter on the association of sleep with nursing health delivery optimization.
Professional Values and Quality of Life, and Ethical Dilemmas
Dealing with the question of change within the professional capacity as well as a coping mechanism is one of the definitive ways in which determination of the quality of input can be done. In nursing, this looks at the continuity in the increment of quality of life of the nurses as they are given more into their work especially when there is stress involved. Consequently, this concern is a factor of weighing the degree of effect in the quality of service given in caring for the patient. By this account, there is a question of what is more than necessary to give which raises the dilemma which also considers whether the dedication is professional accountability. At the same time, it takes into account the aspect of how affected they will be in their human, client, and professional domain as a result of the influence of getting tired and hence decline in the value of the work they do (Kim, Han, & Kim, 2015). In this way the article raises the question of the responsibilities of nurses and burnout with regard to the consequences that comes due to poor quality of service delivery such as compassion fatigue and the reduction in compassion satisfaction that is created as result hence a factor of physical and psychological elements involved in understanding the value and accountability of the nurses.
Method of Study
Caruso et. al (2017) uses a qualitative study in defining the most important aspect of research by looking at different articles and strategies of approach to sleep deprivation study and nursing. In consideration of this, the most appropriate method of qualitative study will be a compilation of material from different studies through which there will be a review and more study of the issue. By taking this method, the author focuses on the specific steps taken in policy development, reduction of working hours, and study of quality of life about the quality of services gives. Therefore, there is development in the perspective and approach of the study as seen in this paper.
The authors identify the perspective of the study as a professional interest from the American Nursing hence a more comprehensive and generalized approach that looks at policy development, health side effects, quality of life, and professional behavior in nursing as affected by burnouts and poor sleeping habit with relation to the quality of service delivered. The articles used to drive the point home are qualitative secondary data from the peer-reviewed article, institutional standards and regulations, and books that are not older than five years. In this way the information is more up to date and works within the present nursing environment hence has scientific merit within the subject. Inclusion of books like U.S. Army Medicine Performance Triad and ANA, Healthy Nurse Healthy Nation, give an insight into the different institutional application that the study touches on and, in that way, pinpoints the implication at different levels of impact (Caruso et. al, 2017). Weaknesses within the study have not been pointed out, however, the implication is that the subject is a continuous changing environment that requires more input with recommendation on hands-on changes and implementation of programs to optimize the change.
On the other hand, Kim, Han, and Kim (2015) use a cross-sectional study through sampling by questionnaire. In this way, there is qualitative analysis from the target population of nurses with input from their personal experiences within the filed. In the determination of the assessment, data on the qualitative measure was based on the questionnaire and thus relatively determinant based on specific demographic characteristics. In this way, correlation and generalization of some of the information were much easier. Based on this, this method was appropriate for the study as it gave a more factual based analysis with a perspective that is informative of the nursing position on the issue of long working hours and its effects to their health and quality of life. The literature used in this study has been from secondary data that touch of value, ethics and professional conduct in nursing. In this way, it creates the opportunity for a comparative element in understanding impact across different situations (Kim, Han, & Kim, 2015). Outlined within the article has been the fact that more studies must be reinforced with the application of evidence-based programs in order to understand the strategies of implementation. In this way, the author points out that there is continuity of improvement and over time
Results of Study
In Caruso et. al (2017), the result indicates that lack of proper sleeping affects the behavior and well as the psychological wellbeing of the individual. In this way, they are unable to give fully into the services and in that process, low-quality healthcare is delivered. Therefore, nurses who work too long hours tend to be less efficient and prone to error. Something that should be considered at all levels of the nursing practice and therefore a requirement to have proper sleeping patterns. This contributes to the nursing practice by pointing out the fact that optimization of service delivery requires that amendments should be done in practice, shifts changes, education and working culture especially sleep for proper delivery of nursing services to the patients. This, therefore, impacts the administration, practice, and education as it implies that all involved should have knowledge of how to behave and the professional standards.
Similarly, Kim, Han, and Kim (2015) show that burnt outs influence the quality of life and the professionalism of nurses and create ethical dilemmas especially when personal life is also involved. In this way, the social, professional responsibilities are affected leading to a need for consideration of the definition of value and ethics within the nursing practice.
Ethical Considerations
For the first study, Caruso and the other writers have worked with a collection of data from different people. The ethical consideration has been taken as the works have been well cited and mentioned and, in that way, a direct reference to its use. On the other hand, the issue of ethical consideration in Kim, Han, and Kim (2015) is on the questionnaire. Approval was sought from the Bronco Memorial Hospital Institutional Review Board for the survey and study participation.
Conclusion
Taking both the lack of sleep and ethics, the relationship is understandable because there would be a factor of ethic and conflict between the professionalism and the values that an individual has in line with overworking. The preparedness of nurse to work at optimum conditions has been said to be compromised with the lack of sleep and by this effect a question of the degree of input that a nurse would be able to have in line with the influence on their roles. On this account, the effect of the overworking not only falls on the nurses themselves but their work, the patients, their families and most especially, their own state of mind in appreciation of the work they do going forward.
