Writing Assignment 2-4 Guidance

General

This paper evaluates your understanding and application of the elementary aerodynamic

concepts in the Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge (PHAK) Chapters 4, 5, and

11 in the Module 2 Readings and Resources. You will discuss topics in PHAK chapters 4,

5, 11 and relate them to the wing and flight control designs of your two selected airplanes.

• You will not discuss armament, roles, missions, cargo, fuel, passengers, or other non-aerodynamic topics that are not in PHAK chapters 4, 5, 11.

• You will not discuss flight controls as a system; but, you are expected to discuss them in the context of how they apply to the motions and axes of flight.

Straight wing airplane discussion

Describe and discuss topics such as these by referencing PHAK 4, 5, and your aeronautical

science mindset is sufficient detail to demonstrate mastery of the Module 2 material.

Describe how these concepts relate to the straight wings.

• The principle of lift and Bernoulli’s law

• Forces of flight including discussions of each force.

• Axes and motions of flight and how the motions are controlled.

Swept wing airplane discussion

Focus on swept differences from the straight wing.

Explain the aerodynamic reason that the wings are swept including a relative wind analysis.

Describe any other differences you see and their aerodynamic purpose(s).

Terms

Use (spell out) proper terms for all terms you use and define each term you use to

demonstrate topic understanding and mastery.

• Angle of attack

• Critical angle of attack

• Relative wind

• Angle of incidence

• Chord

• Camber

• Wingspan

• Bernoulli effect

• Lift, weight, thrust, drag

• Axes of flight and how they are controlled and the named of movement around each
