Each of these individual standards are explained on the following page. Every standard is specifically important for the developmental stages of a young child’s life. Listed beneath each standard will be ways that we help children in the classroom and how you as a parent, can continue to do so in the home.

responding to music

Children will be able to recognize music and the different variations such as fast, slow, loud, and soft. In the classroom, we will use circle time to engage the children in song and dance. This activity will allow children to show what they know using their own voices and movement.

creating music

In the classroom, children will focus on creating music with their bodies and learning to produce small pieces of music to express their ideas. Outside, as well as inside the classroom, websites like PBS kids have interactive musical games such as, “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood.” This age appropriate game can easily be used with parental help at home.

Community Resources

Not only is music and movement important inside the classroom and at home, but it is also great to involve your children in clubs involving music. Grow and Sing is a local studio that connects families through musical involvement.

singing and Playing instruments

In the classroom, I will provide many different instruments for the children to experiment with various sounds, pitches, and how each instrument can be used. Hand clapping games and chanting will be incorporated to help the children establish a beat. As a parent, at home, you can go over notes, different instruments you may have, and practice games that can help.

understanding music

The last standard involves children using their listening ears, recognizes words they have used, and being aware of how they can use music in their day to day activities.

Activity 2 for Parents: Parents can incorporate this standard in their home by practicing songs with their children while cleaning up, getting ready, etc.

An age appropriate resource for children to communicate their basic understanding for music could be used with an application on any form of technology available. This website is a great example of that.

Music and movement is great to involve our children in, but one on one work with music can be very impactful for children at a young age as well. Avalon School of Music has a couple convenient locations with qualified teachers and excellent curriculum they follow to best teach your young ones.
