Theory Analysis

Start the paper with an introductory paragraph. In this paper you are systemically

evaluating your selected theory. Be sure to identify your theory. This should be a minimum of

three sentences moving to four to five depending on the assignment. The introduction ends with

the purpose statement. Use the purpose statement to develop headings and organize the paper.

The purpose of this paper is to choose a middle range or interdisciplinary theory. Identify and

describe the functional components of the selected theory including purpose, scope, major concepts and propositions and major assumptions. Identify the functional components including theoretical and operations definitions, logical organization, and stated outcomes. Identify evaluation components that include congruency with nursing standards, validity and relevance, and implications related to implementation. Lastly, discuss how the theory contributes to the science of nursing.

Structural Components of Selected Theory

Remember there needs to be a paragraph under the level one heading. Theory description

is the initial step in the evaluation of the theory. In this step, you are looking at the structural

(assumptions, concepts, propositions) and functional components (consequences and

purpose) of the theory. Briefly discuss theory description, what are you looking for in this phase.

Support with current literature.

Purpose

Here is where you start to further discuss what makes up the theory as you move through

these level two headings. Not all selected theories will have all the points but identify that.
