Assignment Objective

  • The purpose of this task is to research three industries of which you are interested in. This will enable a better understanding of what is required of you for each industry and give you direction of your career.
  • You must submit a career research report which requires you to research and report on three (3) industries you are interested in and discuss the following sections for each industry.
  • Compulsory to cover the following 4 sections:

Section 1:

  • You are required to research three specific fields of employment within your discipline that you are interested in pursuing a career in.
  • Within your discipline means it is within the specialisation of your Business degree (see next slide)
  • Your research should include the following: the nature of the work, the environment, the education, skills, training and personality traits required to be successful, average salaries, the labour market outlook, related positions and typical employers.

Section 1: ‘Fields’ of employment within your discipline

You will choose three ‘fields’/area if you are specialising in Marketing

Examples:

  • Public Relations
  • Advertising
  • Media & Communications
  • Sales & Direct marketing
  • Market research
  • Journalism

If you are specialising in Marketing, your fields of employment will be in the areas of Public Relations, Advertising, Media, Sales, Market research, etc.

There are many more examples to choose from, so that is up to you to do your research on those areas.

Section 1: ‘Fields’ of employment within your discipline

You will choose three ‘fields’/area if you are specialising in Management

This discipline is broader, so you can use specific job roles

Examples:

  • Operations manager
  • Project manager
  • Office or Property manager
  • Director, CEO, etc.
  • You can also be general and use different business areas:

logistics, procurement, international business, corporate

If you are specialising in Management, your fields of employment will be in the general business areas or use specific job roles (see above)

There are many more examples to choose from, so that is up to you to do your research on those areas.

You will choose three ‘fields’/area if you are specialising in Human Resource Management

Examples:

  • Workforce/succession planning
  • Recruitment & Staffing
  • Compensation, benefits, payroll, etc.
  • Compliance & Safety
  • Employee & Industrial relations
  • Learning & Development

If you are specialising in Human Resource Management, your fields of employment will be in the areas of Workforce planning, Recruitment, Employee/Industrial relations, etc.

There are many more examples to choose from, so that is up to you to do your research on those areas.

Section 2: Specific employers within each field

You will choose three employers from each field

You are required to include the following in your report:

  • the nature of the employer including the size of the organisation and its history
  • the organisational structure
  • its culture and/or mission, values
  • branches or subsidiaries
  • clients or customers
  • products or services
  • opportunities for promotion, etc.

Section 2: Choose specific employer in each 3 fields

Example Structure:

  • Public Relations

1 employer that specialises or mainly focuses on public relations

  • Advertising

1 employer that specialises or mainly focuses on advertising

  • Media & Communications

1 employer that specialises or mainly focuses on media or communications

Section 3: Discuss your Career Path for each field

A description of the typical career path one follows as he/she advances in this career

  • What is an entry level position?
  • What are other names of entry level positions?
  • Is there more than one path one could take?
  • What are the middle to upper level positions?
  • What qualifications are required?

Section 4: Reflections on your findings & research

  • Reflect on how well you think you’d fit in with each employer
  • Describe your satisfaction in working in each career field
  • Has this research confirmed or changed your plans and why?
  • Are there any areas you need to continue to develop skills?
  • Which aspects of the field/position do you like/dislike & why?
  • Which aspects/characteristics do/do not fit?
  • Refer to the exercises completed on interests, skills, and values, personality, and self-reflection
  • Include a summarising or concluding reflection piece at the end of the report (see next slide for structure)

References & Citations

  • The report must include references from at least six different resources consisting of the print resources, web or other sources
  • Sources to use include: books, periodicals, newspapers, professional journals, trade journals and websites
  • Ensure that sources used are accurate, unbiased and reliable
  • Use APA style of referencing – include reference list & in-text citations (see Study Support Team for assistance)
