Assignment 1

Click on the site below and view one (1) of the videos regarding people with varying disabilities.  After viewing, write a brief critique of the video and your opinion about its usefulness in informing professionals--particularly those who do not have a disability--about working with persons with disabilities.

Write your answer in the digital space provided!  Do not attempt to attach as a Word document.

(20 full points are not guaranteed, so please be attentive to your technical writing mechanics!)

An important word of warning:  There are several videos to choose from.  You are only asked to view one.  I believe all are useful to increasing not only our professional sensitivity and competency in work with disabilities, but also our personal lives.  But some of these may be politically offensive to you and some may be offensive because of the subject matter and/or language used by the presenters.  Please remember, these are all produced willingly by the person with disability in the video and/or the permission of the person with the disability who may not be shown.

Assignment 2

View this TED video about a mobility disability, namely cerebral palsy.  (I promise you will find it much more engaging than our last nearly 45 minute video!)

Make one post to include:  (1) an evaluation of how the presenter's talk is illustrative of advocacy for persons with disabilities; and (2) refer to Chapter 6: Mobility Disabilities and discuss how she transitions from engaging general comedy about the seriousness of the intersections of her life as a disabled, ethnic-minority, female.

Use content from pages 228-232 in your post.

Assignment 3

One area of disabilities that your text authors' do not actually address involves common social and personal maladies even persons with disabilities can experience in the same way as persons without disabilities.  One of these maladies is the issue of drug and alcohol abuse, also known as substance use disorders (SUDs).  By itself, SUDs can lead to many types of physical and cognitive disabilities and vice versa.  By itself, an SUD actually falls into the content in Chapter 10:  Mental Health Disabilities, but the authors do not address it as such.

Read these two resources from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), under the Public Health Services (PHS) of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) are good starting points on addressing the intersection of disabilities and substance use disorders (SUDs).

The first is a a "practice brief", Substance Use Disorders in People with Physical and Sensory Disabilities (2011).    (1) https://store.samhsa.gov/shin/content/SMA11-4648/SMA11-4648.pdf.

The second is Chapter 5 of the Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) SAMHSA manual, Comprehensive Case Management for Substance Abuse Treatment (last rev., 2012):(2)  https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK64863/pdf/Bookshelf_NBK64863.pdf.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THIS FINAL CLASS PARTICIPATION:  You will apply the readings above to a specific disability discussed in one of the text chapters describing that disability.  These are Chapters 7-12.  You will then make one post briefly discussing how you would the SAMHSA information above to address an identified SUD occurring with the person with the specific disability you chose.

NOTE:  You may not repeat any single type of disability.  Chapters 7-12 address different categories of disabilities and, within each chapter, there are various types of disabilities presented.  You will obviously repeat one of the chapters, but you cannot repeat the same type of disability .  Whoever posts a disability first by date/time "owns" that disability topic for this assignment, so you must scroll through to be sure the disability you choose to discuss is not already "taken".  If you repeat a disability in your discussion, you cannot earn more than 10 pts. for this final forum!
