Assignment 1: World Service Trade
Due: 3pm, Oct. 10
This assignment is designed to illustrate some major facts of world trade in services. Please keep
in mind that you are graded according to:
1. How well can you follow the instructions?
2. How well can you organize and illustrate your data? (You can replicate the charts in my
examples, but you do not have to do this. The examples are neither the necessary way
nor the best way to showcase the data. Keep in mind that you are required to hand in a
black-white hard copy and you are judged only on that copy.)
3. How well can you draw your conclusions? Please note a better conclusion should focus
more on either the general pattern or the anomalies.
Instructions
Please print out a hard copy of your assignment (using the suggested format) and
submit it to the Assignment Drop Box of the Economics Department by 3pm, October
10.
Data Collection.
1. Service trade data. Go to https://comtrade.un.org/data/ and make the following
choices: 1 type of product “services”; 2 Classification “EBOPS 2002”1; 3 selected desired
data- period “2016”, reporters “All”, partners “world”, trade flows “Import” “Export”,
EBOP S2002 service codes “Total-total EBOPS 2002 Services”; and 4 See the results
“Download CSV”. (You may have to try a few times for the download to happen
correctly. Alternatively, you can choose to preview the data in the last step, click on the
button right by “trade value” to sort by trade value in the descending order and copy
and paste the first two pages into a spreadsheet.)
2. Detailed Service trade data. Use your data from step 1 to find the top 5 exporters and
the top 5 importers (all ranked by trade value). Go to https://comtrade.un.org/data/
and make the following choices: 1 type of product “services”; 3 selected desired data-
period “2016”, reporters as the top 5 exporters from your list, partners “world”, trade
flows “Export”, EBOP S2002 service codes as all 1-digit code2 (when you click on the
blank part of the choice cell, a drop-down menu will appear); and 4 See the results
“Download CSV”. Repeat the process for the imports of the top 5 importers from your
list. (You can do import and export at the same time for one or more country (countries)
if you want.)
You can see below for an example to retrieve the data on US.
1 If you are interested, check https://unstats.un.org/unsd/tradekb/Knowledgebase/EBOPS-2002 for explanation of the classification. 2 You may want to look into http://unstats.un.org/unsd/tradekb/Attachment358.aspx?AttachmentType=1 to see what the categories are. There are 11 in total.
3. National Accounts Aggregates. Go to
https://unstats.un.org/unsd/snaama/selbasicFast.asp. Click on “Basic Data Selection”
and make the following selections: 1 select “all” for countries (or you can pick whatever
countries you have in your above top exporter/importer list); 2 choose “GDP by
Expenditure, at current prices –US Dollars”; 3 choose “2017”. Click submit to download
data.
Data illustration: Pattern in world service trade. Please use one or two charts to
illustrate the answers to the following three questions. Draw two conclusions from each
set of your charts. (one set of charts answers one question.)
Questions:
1. Who are the top 15 service exporters and importers? And how much did they
export/import?
2. What are the service trade balances for these countries?
3. What do the top 3 importers import? What do the top 3 exporters export? Please look
into data references to check what are included in the categories.

Example with Data from 2016. Please note you are not required to repeat what I did here. In
fact, you are encouraged to come up with your own graphs or conclusions.
Question 1: Who are the top 15 (or 16 to make sure to include Canada) service exporters and
importers? And how much did they export/import?
Conclusions:
1. Large economies, such as the US, UK, Germany and China, tend to trade (export and
import) more, in both goods and services.
2. Developed (Advanced) economies tend to be more dominant in service trade, especially
in the exporting side.
Question 2: What are the trade balances for these countries?
Conclusions:
1. The US had the largest trade surplus in services among all countries, while China ran the
largest trade deficit in services among all countries.
2. Compared with the size of the economy, the UK had the highest service trade surplus to
GDP ratio, while Ireland had the highest service trade deficit to GDP ratio.
Question 3: What do the top 3 importers import? What do the top 3 exporters export? What are
included in these categories?
Examples (Imports)
Conclusions
On the imports side, Travel was the largest category for all top three imports. The weight of
travel was significantly higher for China (60%) than for the other two countries (around 25-30%).
