Health Administration Internship (SP19)
Assignment - Organizational Structure
I expect this assignment to be completed within two to four double-spaced pages. Remember to use one resource as a citation in-text and the reference section. Wikipedia is not an acceptable reference. Use your text books, an industry journal, organizational websites, and properly cite (APA) your source. You must accurately identify materials taken from sources.
A score of 1.7 or higher allows you to continue writing without resubmitting your assignment. Once approved, make all corrections before moving onto the following assignment. Review Bb for the required submission date. When submitting this assignment, you agree that: 1) you are submitting your paper to be used and stored as part of the SafeASsign services in accordance with the Blackboard Privacy Policy; (2) your institution may use your paper in accordance with your institution’s policies;’ and (3) your use of SafeASsign will be without recourse against Blackboard Inc. and its affiliates.
Purpose
The Organizational Structure assignment is the first submission as you build your culminating paper. This assignment is a review of what you observed regarding the structure of the organization. You must consider your reader and not assume it is the internship coordinator. Instead, you are writing for three audiences, upper level administrators, a selection committee for graduate school, and the internship coordinator. The paper is not to impress or honor those you intern with, it is a fact-finding mission for you to understand the organization and how leaders fulfill their role within. Remember, you will have an introduction to the paper which will be written as part of the final assignment. Do not use the Organizational Structure section of the paper as an introduction as this will be repetitive. This is your first attempt and I do not expect perfection.
Approach
Objectively inform the reader about the organization. Remember, you are telling a story, not answering a list of questions. I suggest you approach this assignment by identifying; (1) the organization, (2) organizational structure, (3) leadership including senior leaders, and (4) considerations for your future.
First, provide a description of the organization including operating statistics consisting of; (A) location, (B) bed size, (C) medical staff size, (D) outpatient/inpatient statistics, (E) annual ER visits, (F) number of full-time employees (FTEs) and part-time employees, and (G) other relevant statistics specific to the sector of the industry. You should identify the mission, and vision in your description. If you have a copy of the organizational chart, include it as part of the appendix and reference it within the text. Write to create flow and make meaning for the reader. Listing the mission and vision without connecting it with the structure is not valuable.
Second, identify your assigned department by describing the organizational structure. If you are part of a large organization, do not include all of the leaders and departments of the organization. Focus on your specific department and the reporting chain of leadership command.
Next, identify the leadership of the organization. Include the senior managers, their degrees and experience. The purpose is not to list every manager of a large organization, instead focus on the chain of command starting with your Site Preceptor. Include your site preceptor, their supervisor, and their supervisor’s up to the president – CEO or board if it is a non-profit. Do not list the board members. Explain what you learned about the manager’s backgrounds. Your objective is to learn about their background and how their backgrounds may influence your future and continuing your education. Avoid using first names of professionals. You should refer to individuals as Mr., Ms., Mrs., or use their full name. Example. Al Nowak is the Director of Human Resources. Mr. Nowak earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Grand Valley State University (GVSU) in Therapeutic Recreation or Mr. Nowak earned a bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation from GVSU.
Finally, describe what you must consider as you prepare to enter the workforce. Your explanation should be informed from the leader’s experiences and backgrounds. Will you consider going on for a master degree immediately after your undergraduate or will you work first? Remember, most manager and leadership positions require a minimum of a master degree.
Helpful Hints
Remember, individuals earn a degree. Below is a helpful reference page to assist with identifying the appropriate writing of bachelor and/or master’s degree
http://www.dailywritingtips.com/masters-degree-or-masters-degree/
· Speaking generically, you would write master’s degree: Jack has finally earned his master’s degree.
· Speaking of a specific degree, you would capitalize Master: He holds a Master of Fine Arts from State University.
· Speaking generically, you would write master’s degree:
· Use periods when abbreviating academic degrees. Ex. Dr. Bond received her A.B., M.A., and Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. –Ohio University
Include a brief history of their work experience. Avoid vague statements such as worked for less than a year or for a short time. It is best to provide a year and month, be clear. (Example – Al Nowak began his employment at CMU in August of 2014. Prior to CMU, Al worked at Lansing Community College (LCC) for nine years in multiple roles including the Director of Student Life – Ombudsman, and as the K-12 Relations Coordinator.)
