· ASSIGNMENT #1 - WRITING BASED ON PERSONAL EXPERIENCE AND ONE EXTERNAL SOURCE (10%)

Write a 1,000-word essay in answer to this question: why is there an education problem in Canada today? Use your own experience as a student and select one significant source to work around.

Your experiences in education could come from another country but should in some way connect to the Canadian context. Be sure to indicate specific levels of education so that the reader can identify what age groups or types of education you have in mind.

Your one important source could be web page, newspaper or magazine article, scholarly article in peer reviewed journal, or blog. Be sure to identify what kind of source you are using, however, and include it in a section at the end of your essay called List of References (even though you are using only one source). For this assignment, the source does not need to come from an academic journal, but it must demonstrate effective and intelligent writing. As you respond to the source, you are free to critique the ideas and, of course, to show where you agree or disagree with the other writer.

Do not copy sentences or sections of the source but provide brief quotations and summarize ideas, as appropriate.

Assessment: One point for each of the following criteria.

a. Is there a specific title that reflects the topic and the writer’s approach? Is there an APA style title page?

b. Is there a clear thesis statement? Has the topic been narrowed sufficiently for discussion?

c. Does the writing reveal critical thinking? Does the writer ask or answer key questions?

d. Is the essay well organized?

e. Is there an effective introduction?

f. Is there an effective conclusion?

g. Does each paragraph have a topic sentence?

h. Does the writer demonstrate competency in using the source effectively?

i. Is the writing mostly free of basic sentence errors such as comma splices, sentence fragments, and run on sentences?

j. Overall, is there a balance of ideas and details?
