Internal Strengths and Weaknesses
The following are the strengths of John Hopkins health System:
(1) Excellent Mission and Commitment: John Hopkins Health System is committed to enhancing the health and wellbeing of the families they serve and care for, in an environment of quality, growth and learning. Its mission is to improve the health of the community and the world by setting the standard of excellence in medical education, research and clinical care.
(2) Excellent Service: It is world-renowned for its excellence in many medical specialties, including neurology and neurosurgery, otolaryngology, psychiatry, rheumatology and pediatric care.
(3) Excellent Plan of Action - Its strategy is carefully planned. Its purpose and aim are for precision.
(4) Excellent Staff - The staff are knowledgeable, skillful, reliable, and dedicated.
(5) Excellent Professional Development and Continuing Education Programs for Staffs - The hospital has a Skills Enhancement Program. They are dedicated to providing support for the enhancement of their employees.
(6) Excellent System – John Hopkins Health System engages in biomedical discoveries, transforming healthcare, and advancing medical education.
(7) Caring Culture – It has great working culture. It provides room for growth.
(8) Excellent Teamwork – Everyone works cohesively towards their mission and vision in providing quality health experiences for the patients and their families.
(9) Advanced Technology – they have updated technology; and
(10) Outstanding Facility - The Johns Hopkins Hospital medical campus includes several buildings connected with each other for easy access to various patient care area.
The following are its weaknesses:
(1) Employees’ Salaries and Benefits – The package the employees receive depends on whether they are union or non-union (Indeed. Com)
(2) Shared Values - Many perceive that the hospital environment is so cold and uninviting that work environment is not inclusive and direct (Indeed.com).
(3) Structure - John Hopkins structure has decentralized organizational structure that contributes to a silo effect that limits the spread of ideas, practices, and culture.
(4) Leadership Styles – Leaders still need to make their staff aware of what they need to work on. They need develop and implement plans to address any areas of improvement
(5) Inconsistent Principles and Policies- They write their rules but the renowned healthcare system and its five sister hospitals in Baltimore haven’t always followed their principles (Bedi and McGrory, 2018).
(6) Failures to Respond – Federal inspectors cited that John Hopkins failed to respond to several serious cases since 2011 despite its reputation for safety.
(7) Lack of Transparency –According it is difficult for hospitals to be “100 percent transparent” but that should be every hospital’s goal. John Hopkins cases are “bothersome” (Medi and McGrory, 2018).
(8) Safety Practices – the following is the statement of John Hopkins as regard to this. “It is tragic fact that medical errors occur at every health organization, including at John Hopkins Health System, where we treat millions of patients each year across our six hospitals and other locations. The true test of John Hopkins’ safety culture is how we address and learn from mistakes when they occur.
(9) Lack of Staff – Accordingly, the lack nurses to attend to patients effectively and efficiently.
(10) Lack of medical supplies - John Hopkins Health System is described to be chronically understaffed and short of medical supplies.
