Life Cycles in Healthcare

This paper is aims to discuss how an organization can use the life cycle information in an attempt to revive the healthcare service or organization. Specifically, it shall attempt to explain how John Hopkins Health System can use the lifecycle information to improve if not revive its declining healthcare services.

Wayland and McDonald (2015) explained that there are five phases of a life cycle that can be utilized to revive a declining organization: (1) birth which is “the stage of establishing a viable product- market strategy”; (2) growth which is the “stage where the product is broadened”; (3) maturity which is the stage where the company becomes conservative and “do not perform innovations or engage in very few efforts at diversification or acquisition, and fail even to make incremental changes to the products or services offered”; (4) revival where “remarkable changes begin to take place in the product-marker strategies”; and (5) decline is the stage where the company try to “conserve resources depleted by poor performance by abstaining from product or service innovation” (Miller and Friesen, 1984 as cited in Wayland and McDonald, 2015).

Understanding the life cycle strategies can prepare a company in addressing the inevitable phase of decline. In this study, the researcher aims to discuss how such strategies can help revive or address the declining phase of John Hopkins Healthcare System. It must be understood that the John Hopkins Health System Corporation (JHHS) is a “not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing the highest quality patient health care in the treatment and prevention of human illness (HopkinsMedicine. Org)”.

Linton (2017) indicates that when organizations are about to reach its decline stage, they would be experiencing warning signs such as damaging fall in revenue, resources, and market share and profitability. For the organization to survive, it is important them to recognize the warning signs and to take action to arrest the trends. In today’s age of modernity and digital technology, John Hopkins Health System should be able to do the following: (1) Analyze the organization; (2) Understand the reasons for decline; (3) Communicate Changes; (4) Innovate Programs and Services; and (5) Develop.

The first things that John Hopkins Health System needs to do then is to analyze the trends that could lead to its decline. It should analyze what is going on with the business. it should be able to look for other models of effective services and assess the capacity of its workforce and conduct trainings to improve efficiency and competence to handle emerging health issues. An action plan to address the decline of health services cannot be done unless organization understand very well the reasons of the decline, John Hopkins Health System Corporation must then to identify such reasons of decline. It could be strong competitive activity or decrease demand because of changing requirements of customers. It could be the non-availability of better or newer products. John Hopkins Health System Corporation then needs to invest or new trends of treatment, medicine, and train their staff to be able to effectively cope with such new trends. Communicating to the entire organization the problems and implementing the changes and innovations that are necessary are essential components to address the decline of the company. The third important aspect then is communication. The entire John Hopkins Health System Corporation must understand the situation and should be able to fully participate in making the necessary changes and innovations that would enable them to provide quality health experiences and better health environment for their patients and their families. John Hopkins Health System Corporation must be able to innovate an environment that would ensure patients and the community are provided well-trained medical workforce who can attend to their illnesses and they are in an environment that provides them not only quality care but quality health experiences.
